Laying On Of Hands

The laying on of hands is found widely throughout The Bible in a variety of situations including blessings, bestowing of inheritance rights, animal sacrifices, commission to leadership or ministry duties, the reception of the Holy Spirit, healing, and raising the dead.

Evangelist "When Joseph [see Coat Of Many Colors] saw that his father [see Children of Jacob] laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; and he took his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father; for this one is the first-born; put your right hand upon his head." But his father refused, and said, "I know, my son, I know; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; nevertheless his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations." (Genesis 48:17-19 RSV) (see Anglo-Israelism)

"And when he has made an end of atoning for the holy place and the tent of meeting [see The Tabernacle In The Wilderness] and the altar, he shall present the live goat; and Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness." (Leviticus 16:20-21 RSV) (see The Day Of Atonement)

"And The Lord said to Moses, "Bring out of the camp him who cursed; and let all who heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. And say to the people of Israel, "Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin." (Leviticus 24:13-14 RSV)

"And you shall present the Levites before the tent of meeting, and assemble the whole congregation of the people of Israel. When you present the Levites before The Lord, the people of Israel shall lay their hands upon the Levites, and Aaron shall offer the Levites before The Lord as a wave offering from the people of Israel, that it may be theirs to do the service of The Lord." (Numbers 8:10-11 RSV)

"And Moses did as The Lord commanded him; he took Joshua and caused him to stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, and he laid his hands upon him, and commissioned him as The Lord directed through Moses." (Numbers 27:22-23 RSV)

"And when Jesus entered Peter's house [see Peter], He saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever; He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and served Him." (Matthew 8:14-15 RSV)

"While He was thus speaking to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before Him, saying, "My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live ... when the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose." (Matthew 9:18,25 RSV) (see Miracles Of Jesus Christ)

"And they were bringing children to Him, that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it He was indignant, and said to them, "Let the children come to Me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs The Kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." And He took them in His arms and blessed them, laying His hands upon them." (Mark 10:13-16 RSV)

"Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. And demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But He rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ." (Luke 4:40-41 RSV) (see Why Demons Are Afraid Of You)

"And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And He touched his ear and healed him." (Luke 22:50-51 RSV) (see The Fateful Night)

"Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria [see also Samaritans] had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John [see Did Peter Have The Primacy?], who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8:14-17 RSV) (see Baptism)

"So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight." (Acts 9:17-18) (see On The Road To Damascus)

"While they were worshiping The Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off." (Acts 13:2-3 RSV) (see Paul's First Missionary Journey)

"On hearing this, they were baptized in The Name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied." (Acts 19:5-6 RSV) (see Speaking In Tongues)

"Hence I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:6-7 RSV) (see Christian Living)
