Christ In The Psalms

by Wayne Blank

The Psalms, which are quoted in the New Testament (see New Testament Fact File) more than any other Old Testament (see Old Testament Fact File) book, are often regarded as beautifully inspiring songs or poetry, which they are, but they are also much more. Centuries before He was born, the Psalms plainly expressed prophetic knowledge of the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. A few examples:

Harp "You are My son, today I have begotten you. Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your heritage, and the ends of the earth Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel." (Psalm 2:7-9 RSV) See also Acts 13:33.

"Thou hast given Him dominion over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under His feet." (Psalm 8:6 RSV) See also Hebrews 2:6-10.

"For Thou dost not give Me up to Sheol, or let Thy Godly One see the Pit." (Psalm 16:10 RSV) See also Acts 2:27.

"Yea, dogs are round about Me; a company of evildoers encircle Me; they have pierced My hands and feet - I can count all My bones - they stare and gloat over Me; they divide My garments among them, and for My raiment they cast lots." (Psalm 22:16-18 RSV) See also John 19:24.

"My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" (Psalm 22:1 RSV) See also Matthew 27:46.

"Even My bosom friend in whom I trusted, who ate of My bread, has lifted his heel against Me." (Psalm 41:9 RSV) See also John 13:18.

"For zeal for Thy house has consumed Me, and the insults of those who insult Thee have fallen on Me." (Psalm 69:9 RSV) See also John 2:17.

"They gave Me poison for food, and for My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink." (Psalm 69:21 RSV) See also Matthew 27:34,48.

"Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool." (Psalm 110:1 RSV) See also Matthew 22:44.

"You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek." (Psalm 110:4 RSV) See also Hebrews 7:17.

"The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner." (Psalm 118:22 RSV) See also Matthew 21:42.

"Blessed be He who enters in the name of The Lord!" (Psalm 118:26 RSV) See also Matthew 21:9.
