There are hundreds of references to wind throughout The Bible. Wind can be caused by such natural factors as the unequal heating of the planet's surface, whereby warmed air rises and cooler air flows in to replace it. Or, God can create and direct the wind for whatever purpose that He chooses. There is also at least one reference that implies that even Satan can control the wind to a limited extent.

Ancient Sailing Ship Winds From God

Throughout Bible History, God often used the wind, and other elements of the weather, according to His will:

"But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided." (Genesis 8:1 RSV) (see The Flood)

"So Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and The Lord brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night; and when it was morning the east wind had brought the locusts." (Exodus 10:13 RSV) (see The Ten Plagues)

"Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left." (Exodus 14:21-22 RSV) (see Is This How The Red Sea Parted?)

"And behold, The Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before The Lord, but The Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but The Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but The Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave." (1 Kings 19:11-13 RSV)

Satanic Wind

As a very powerful spirit being, Satan can control the wind from time to time:

"And The Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do not put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of The Lord ... Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house; and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead." (Job 1:12,18-19 RSV) (see That Old Serpent and Did God Create The Devil?)

Natural Wind

As with everywhere else, the land of Israel has its own prevailing wind system:

"The wind blows to the south, and goes round to the north; round and round goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns." (Ecclesiastes 1:6 RSV)

"The north wind brings forth rain" (Proverbs 25:23 RSV)

"And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care if we perish?" And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." (Mark 4:37-39 RSV) (see Miracles Of Jesus Christ)

"And when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close inshore. But soon a tempestuous wind, called the northeaster, struck down from the land; and when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven." (Acts 27:13-15 RSV) (see Paul's Journey To Rome)

In Prophecy

Wind is also found in Prophecy:

"Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dream of Pharaoh is one; God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dream is one. The seven lean and gaunt cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty ears blighted by the east wind are also seven years of famine. It is as I told Pharaoh, God has shown to Pharaoh what he is about to do." (Genesis 41:25-28 RSV) (see Coat Of Many Colors)

"As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand, and it smote the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces; then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth." (Daniel 2:34-35 RSV) (see Daniel's Statue)
