"And out of the ground The Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil ... And The Lord God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die ... And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 2:9,16-17, 3:2-5 RSV)
Two Kinds Of Knowledge
Humans are curious, intelligent (often in a very reckless sort of way) creatures. We know so much, we think that we know so much, that sometimes we think that we know it all. Perhaps the most arrogant, and unknowledgeable, act that any of God's created children could commit is to say that their Creator doesn't exist.
God gave us the capacity to think, to reason, and to understand, but unfortunately, since the day that humanity "fell" for Satan's lie that we can believe in ourselves, and Satan, rather than in God, our knowledge has been that of conflicting extremes - for good, and for evil, for life, and for death.
The Knowledge That Leads To Life
"Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to further the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, Who never lies, promised ages ago" (Titus 1:1-2 RSV)
"The fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. For by Me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life." (Proverbs 9:10-11 RSV)
"Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in Thy Commandments." (Psalm 119:66 RSV)
"For it is the God Who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:6 RSV)
The Knowledge That Leads To Death
"This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish." (James 3:15 RSV)
"There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." (Proverbs 14:12 RSV)
"Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of The Lord, would have none of My counsel, and despised all My reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacence of fools destroys them" (Proverbs 1:29 RSV)
"Thus says The Lord, your Redeemer, Who formed you from the womb: "I am The Lord, Who made all things, Who stretched out the heavens alone, Who spread out the earth - Who was with Me? - Who frustrates the omens of liars, and makes fools of diviners; Who turns wise men back, and makes their knowledge foolish" (Isaiah 44:24-25 RSV)
"Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away" (1 Corinthians 2:6 RSV)
"For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their craftiness," and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile" (1 Corinthians 3:19-20 RSV)
