Losing It

A few times each week, out of the many thousands of people all around the world who are now regular readers of Daily Bible Study, I receive a very angry response from a reader. Most often, and most curiously, those who "lose it" at me the most aren't those who can, at least in their own minds, refute something from the Bible that was published, but rather those who can't refute it. Two studies in particular that I published recently brought in an above-average number of those.

The Holy Bible When I began this ministry, it was with one purpose in mind - to publish what the Bible says, what God says, in an easy-to-read, straight-to-the-point, daily lesson. I have tried very hard to personally "stay out of the way" in what is written, to let the Bible speak for itself. The fact that the words "I," "me" and "my" are seldom found in the daily studies is no accident.

Daily Bible Study is written in a respectful, but deliberate "regardless of who likes it or not" manner - myself included. I know how that approach can at times be a little irksome, because I too have had to make changes in my own life, in my own religious beliefs and practices, based on what I have found in God's Word. I do "practice what I preach," and that isn't any easier for me than for anyone else who truly wants to obey God on His terms, not our own.

I will never (or may God strike me down dead if I ever start) write solely-intended-to-be-popular "God will save us no matter what we do" trash that has no basis in Biblical reality. I had a minister write to me a few months ago who said that he'd like to be more "Biblically plain spoken" to his congregation, but that he was afraid that he'd be fired. I asked him, which is better, to be fired by people for preaching God's plain truth, or to be "fired" by God, as in the lake of fire, for knowingly leading people astray by teaching what isn't true? The "many different roads to the same place" analogy actually applies to the lake of fire, not to eternal life in the Kingdom of God:

"Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few." (Matthew 7:13-14 RSV)

"Not every one who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and do many mighty works in Your Name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you evildoers.'" (Matthew 7:21-23 RSV)

The Holy Bible is trustworthy, God's Word is True. I ask no one to believe anything that I've written, but I do ask that you believe the Word of God that is plainly written in The Holy Bible. Rejecting me or something that I have written is pretty safe, I'm completely harmless, but rejecting something that God has written, in His Bible, is very dangerous. Come the Judgment Day, those who "lost it" at God's Word might just find that they've "lost it" when it comes to salvation.

"For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they then commit apostasy, since they crucify the Son of God on their own account and hold Him up to contempt. For land which has drunk the rain that often falls upon it, and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed; its end is to be burned" (Hebrews 6:4-8 RSV)

"He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me." (Luke 10:16 RSV)

"He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings has a judge; the Word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. For I have not spoken on My own authority; the Father who sent Me has Himself given Me commandment what to say and what to speak" (John 12:48-49 RSV)

"For he will render to every man according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, He will give eternal life; but for those who are factious and do not obey the Truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury." (Romans 2:6-8 RSV)

"And if any one will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town." (Matthew 10:14-15 RSV)
