Heaven's Clock

"And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also [see A Picture Of Heaven]. And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day." (Genesis 1:14-19 RSV) (see The Seven Days Of Creation)

Throughout Bible History, people used the Hebrew calendar (see Bible Calendar), which used the natural movements of the heavens to tell time - a day was from sunset to sunset, a month was from new moon to new moon (the word month means moon), and a year was from spring to spring. Bible Months always began at new moon, meaning that, for example, Passover, which was observed on the 14th day of the month of Nisan, always occurred at full moon. A certain classic movie about The Ten Commandments, although excellent overall, is in error by showing a crescent moon on the night of the Passover (see Passover In Egypt and The Ten Plagues) when the death of the firstborn occurred - the moon was full that night.
