Who Was "the mother of the sons of Zebedee"?
From the record of Bible History:
When Jesus was crucified, standing among the women near the cross (see Stauros) with Jesus' mother Mary was Salome, who was Mary's sister, and therefore Jesus' aunt:
"Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene." (John 19:25 RSV)"There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome" (Mark 15:40 RSV)
Jesus' aunt Salome was the wife of Zebedee, and the mother of the apostles James and John:
"And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father" (Matthew 4:21 RSV)"among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee." (Matthew 27:56 RSV)
Salome's politically ambitious request of her nephew Jesus Christ that He give His cousins James and John a high position in the Kingdom of God was not granted (although the apostles are going to have high positions in the Kingdom of God, based on what they were, and what they did, not who they were, or who they knew i.e. Matthew 19:28), not merely because Jesus didn't make decisions that way, but because it was a matter that only God decides.
