Amnesty

Amnesty is a term used to describe a free pardon for past acts. Although free (i.e. neither bought nor earned), it's conditional. The person given amnesty must have turned completely away from their intolerable activities, and thereafter are living an acceptable life. Then, the record of their earlier behavior is officially erased. The word amnesty itself reflects this act of oblivion; it's derived from the Greek word amnesia, from which also comes the English word amnesia, meaning to forget.

The Ten Commandments God Will Forget The Sins Of The Repentant

"This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My Laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall not teach every one his fellow or every one his brother, saying, 'Know The Lord,' for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." (Hebrews 8:10-12 RSV)

"But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God, then to wait until His enemies should be made a stool for His feet. For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says The Lord: I will put My Laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds," then He adds, "I will remember their sins and their misdeeds no more." (Hebrews 10:12-17 RSV)

Repent and Live

"The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. But if a wicked man turns away from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all My statutes and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness which he has done he shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says The Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?" (Ezekiel 18:20 RSV)
