Are You Salty?

by Wayne Blank

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the Prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:10-16 RSV)

The Dead Sea Fear God, Not Other Humans

"So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known [see Glass Houses]. What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So every one who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before My Father Who is in heaven; but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father Who is in heaven." (Matthew 10:26-33 RSV)

"So we are always of good courage; we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from The Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord [see Resurrections]. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please Him. For we must all appear before the Judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men; but what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience." (2 Corinthians 5:6-11 RSV)
