Numbering God's Commandments

There is very little controversy regarding the fact that there are Ten Commandments, as the Scriptures make absolutely plain:

"And The Lord said to Moses, "Write these Words; in accordance with these Words I have made a Covenant with you and with Israel." And he was there with The Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote upon the tables the Words of the Covenant, the Ten Commandments." (Exodus 34:27-28 RSV)

There is however disagreement about how God's Ten Commandments are numbered - Jews and (most) Protestants number them the God-intended way, while Roman Catholics and some others number them their own way. The foremost common difference between the two camps seems to be that Jews and (most) Protestants correctly believe that the use of idols has been outlawed by God (as the Ten Commandments should make very plain to anyone who truly wants to obey God), while Roman Catholics and some others believe that God has contradicted Himself and is quite pleased with their praying to, and kneeling before, and bowing down to, the many religious statues and icons in their churches and homes.

The Ten Commandments It should be kept in mind that the Ten Commandments were given to the ancient Israelites, not to Roman Catholics who came along many centuries later, and that Jews (who were one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel at Mount Sinai) have never changed the Commandments. This historical fact was plainly stated by the Christian apostle Paul - the Church of Rome has named numerous popes after Paul, and yet they very often completely ignore, or hatefully and violently oppose (as this author has also been increasingly experiencing lately), a great amount of what Paul plainly taught in the New Testament:

"Then what advantage has the Jew? ... To begin with, the Jews are entrusted with the oracles [i.e. the Words, the Scriptures - see Which Bible Did Jesus Use?] of God." (Romans 3:1-2 RSV)

The Correct Numbering Of God's Ten Commandments

Commandments One to Four:
How To Properly Worship The Only True God

"I am The Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me."

"You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I The Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love Me and keep My Commandments."

"You shall not take The Name of The Lord your God in vain; for The Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His Name in vain."

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to The Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates; for in six days The Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore The Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."

Commandments Five to Ten:
How To Live In Peace With Humanity:

"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which The Lord your God gives you."

"You shall not kill."

"You shall not commit adultery."

"You shall not steal."

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's."
(Exodus 20:2-17 RSV)

The Incorrect Numbering Of God's Ten Commandments

The Church of Rome combines the first two Commandments into one (in an attempt to make it seem that the use of idols is permitted for the worship of The Lord), and splits the Tenth Commandment into two (making two "thou shalt not covet" commandments, one for people and one for property). They turn Commandments One and Two into their first, the Third into their second, the Fourth into their third, the Fifth into their fourth, the Sixth into their fifth, the Seventh into their sixth, the Eighth into their seventh, the Ninth into their eighth, and the Tenth into their ninth and tenth.
