The Author of Life

Peter's address to the people of Jerusalem, as they stood in awe of a miraculous healing done through, not by, Peter and John:

"Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? [i.e. Peter and John humbly passed the "don't get too big for your britches test," something that lost Moses his entry into the Promised Land - see Heartbreak Mountain] The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His servant Jesus, Whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Author of life, Whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And His Name, by faith in His Name, has made this man strong whom you see and know; and the faith which is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the Prophets, that His Christ should suffer, He thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, Whom heaven must receive until the time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old." (Acts 3:12-21 RSV)

The Word of God The Author of Life, The Word of God

In the above Scriptures Peter uses the term "the Author of life" in referring to Jesus Christ. The use of the word Author is an appropriate, and accurate, translation of the original Greek word of the New Testament [see New Testament Fact File], pronounced ar-kay-gos, meaning "someone who originates, causes or initiates something." It's also ironically appropriate because, since authors are also associated with words, that Jesus Christ was the Word (or in the Greek, Logos) of God, through Whom all things were created:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it ... He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world knew Him not. He came to His own home, and His own people received Him not. But to all who received Him, who believed in His Name, He gave power to become Children Of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father." (John 1:1-5,10-14 RSV)

The classic King James Version of 1611 translates the original Greek word ar-kay-gos in Acts 3:15 (i.e. "the Author of life" in the opening paragraph) as "the Prince of Life," however the King James then correctly translates the same Greek word as author in Hebrews 12:2:

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses [see Martyrs], let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross [see Stauros], despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the Throne of God." (Hebrews 12:1-2 RSV)
