Mary's Other Children?
by Wayne Blank
"Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what The Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel" - which means, "God with us." When Joseph woke up, he did what The Angel Of The Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave Him the name Jesus." (Matthew 1:20-25)
"So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth [in photograph] in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David [see Ruth and The Chosen People]. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." (Luke 2:4-7)
"Coming to His hometown, He began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked. [see Miracles Of Jesus Christ] "Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't His mother's name Mary, and aren't His brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor." And He did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith." (Matthew 13:54-58)
"Jesus' brothers said to Him, "You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." For even His own brothers did not believe in Him." (John 7:3-5) (Note: "brothers" here cannot mean His disciples, or the Twelve, who did believe in Him)
"This, the first of His miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples put their faith in Him. After this He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples." (John 2:11-12)
Fact Finder: Keeping in mind that the apostle James (the brother of John) was killed (Acts 12:2) before the New Testament book of James was written, what other prominent and highly regarded James (who after Jesus' resurrection realized that He really was the Savior, and then became a converted believer) is the most likely author?
