By The Book - Nahum

by Wayne Blank

Nineveh 1. What nation was the subject of Nahum's prophecy? (Nahum 1:1)

2. Is God slow to get angry? (Nahum 1:3)

3. Will God leave the guilty unpunished? (Nahum 1:3)

4. What sort of people were the ancient Assyrians? (Nahum 3:1-4)

Nineveh (ruins in photo) was the capital of the Assyrian empire (see Ancient Empires - Assyria), which destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel by 721 B.C. Founded by Nimrod not long after the great Flood in the time of Noah, it became one of the greatest powers in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley. The people of Nineveh repented and were spared after the warning by Jonah over a century earlier, but by the time of Nahum they would not take heed - God then had them conquered by the Babylonians (see Ancient Empires - Babylon).
