What Is Sin?

by Wayne Blank

Today, there are many opinions regarding the meaning of "sin." Behavior that may seem very harmless and good to one person, may be viewed as very sinful and wicked to someone else. Some believe that there are different degrees of sin (e.g. "little white lies" versus criminal perjury), and that God will forgive some sins and not forgive others ("venial" and "mortal" sins). But did God leave it up to us to decide what is sinful? Where can we look for the answers?

Bible The Holy Bible is God's guiding light for humanity. It shows us what is right, and what is wrong, based upon the infinite wisdom and knowledge of Almighty God.

Humans can be wrong, but God is never wrong. Like a parent telling a young child not to touch something that's hot, God does not give us His laws to be mean and overbearing, but to keep us from burning ourselves. God knows what works because He made it all work - He designed and created all that exists (see The Seven Days Of Creation).

The Lord outlaws sin because sinful behavior always, sooner or later, results in misery, grief and death. Put another way, sin can be defined as behavior that will always fail. Sin is for losers.

Will God forgive some sins, but not others? Is there such a thing as an unpardonable ("mortal") sin?

God will forgive every sin, if we truly repent of it. Later, if we slip up and sin, God will again forgive us, if we again truly repent. In fact, God will forgive all past sin, and all future undefiant repeats, if we always truly do our very best, and immediately repent if problems occur. God does not condemn innocent human weakness in those who are doing their very best to obey Him.

Is there a sin that God will not forgive? Yes. In the Words of Jesus Christ - "I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against The Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." (Mark 3:28-29)

The Holy Spirit enables us to understand and follow The Way. Different people have their opportunity at different times, but once someone is aware of God's Truth, they then must choose to accept, or reject, His offer of eternal life (see Why Were You Born?). Those who knowingly, deliberately, defiantly, and permanently reject God's offer of life, which is made possible through The Holy Spirit, will not be forgiven. By their own choice, their destiny will be the lake of fire (see The Last Day)

"Sin is the transgression of The Law." (1 John 3:4 KJV). The Ten Commandments, along with all of the other instructions given by God, as recorded in your Holy Bible, are the keys to freedom, happiness, success, and eternal life. God's Law works.
