Egyptian Dynasties

by Wayne Blank

In the history of ancient Egypt, the term "pharaoh" originally meant the royal house, or palace, with an implied meaning of "government." Eventually, it came to be used as a title for the king of Egypt himself. While the Pharaoh of the Exodus is one of the most famous people of Bible History, the actual name of this particular monarch was not recorded in The Bible.

Moses and Pharaoh Although the Exodus can be approximately dated (see the dynasty list below), there remains disagreement among Biblical historians as to not just the year, but the century when it happened - various researchers sometimes differ by as much as two hundred years. This causes uncertainty regarding the identity of the unnamed Pharaoh that opposed Moses and Aaron. Amenhotep II, Merneptah, Thothmes III and Rameses II, among others, have all been suggested as possibilities.

Egyptian Dynasties

The Egyptian civilization, one of the oldest known, developed in the Nile River region well over 5,000 years ago. The history of ancient Egypt is divided into a number of periods, kingdoms and dynasties.
