"Believe Not Every Spirit"

Anti is a Greek-originated prefix that means against, while false is from a Latin-originated word that means to deceive. Although something that is false is by definition against, or anti, what is true, in regard to Jesus Christ, the end-time world scene is going to be a massive Satan-empowered and Satan-inspired variety of people against Christ and Christianity in two very different (but identical in purpose) ways, from fierce direct opposition to Christianity on one hand, to deception, claiming to be Christian while actually leading people away from Christ, on the other. The good news is that true Christians will be victorious, but only after a time of great tribulation prior to The Return Of Jesus Christ.

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God"

The original Greek word of the Scriptures that has been translated into English as "antichrist" is (pronounced) an-tee-krees-tos, means against the anointed one. By definition it has a meaning of direct resistance against Christ and Christians, although as described in the verses below, that surely will occur as much through deception and subterfuge as by hostile opposition and persecution:

Tribulation

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that Spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." (1 John 4:1-3 KJV)

"Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son." (1 John 2:18-22 KJV)

"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." (2 John 1:7 KJV)

"False Christs" on the other hand, although also actually being anti-Christ, will appear to be pro-Christian, some to blasphemous extremes; with the assistance of Satan, some will even claim to be Christ:

"Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be [see Why Did They Face East?]. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together." (Matthew 24:23-28 KJV)

"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." (2 Corinthians 11:13-15 KJV)
