Be All That You Can Be

by Wayne Blank

"There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces." (Proverbs 30:24-28 KJV)

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God"

The Creator of all things gave appropriate wisdom to all of His creatures; wisdom, that if obeyed, provides success in life, to reach one's full potential, whether man ("man" in the Bible is most often used to denote the species, male and female) or beast - or even insects.

Holy Bible To humans, tiny ants are often regarded as huge pests, but only because ants make full use of the "ant wisdom" that God gave to them. King Solomon used "mindless" ants as an object lesson for wisdom:

"Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest." (Proverbs 6:6-8 KJV)

Humans of course are not ants. Humans have far greater intelligence than ants. But do humans have more wisdom than ants? Yes, but only if humans make use of the appropriate wisdom that God has made available to them, rather than "wisdom" that they invent for themselves.

Jesus Christ, our example, made full use of the wisdom that God gave Him.

"And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him" (Luke 2:40 KJV)

"And when the Sabbath day was come, He began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing Him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? And what wisdom is this which is given unto Him" (Mark 6:2 KJV)

The apostles discovered that making use of the wisdom that God gives man made them far wiser than the "wise of the world." That holds true in the present, as it will in the future.

"And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake." (Acts 6:10 KJV)

"For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist." (Luke 21:15 KJV)

Those who make full use of the wisdom that God has given them will be given even more wisdom if they ask for it in faith.

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed." (James 1:5-6 KJV)
