Where Does A 1,000 Pound Gorilla Sit?
by Wayne Blank
But Hitler was a Satanic man, who nevertheless often claimed that God favored and blessed him (e.g. "Who says I am not under the special protection of God?"). After the people of his nation were liberated from his rule (even though they elected him in the first place), those responsible for the atrocities of his government were put on trial as the war criminals that they truly were, apart from the cowards, including Hitler himself, who committed suicide in an attempt to escape justice. But there is no escaping or defense from God's Judgment that awaits them, and all like them, from throughout history. The Day awaits them all. They are all going to answer for the evil that they've done, sometimes even in God's Name (another Hitler quote: "I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator").
"he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God"
Human history is riddled with figurative 1,000 pound gorillas - lawless, self-righteous conquerors who went on murderous rampages, against other nations, and eventually toward their own people, with the national power that they abused and misused at their command. They rose, then they always fell, sometimes by military defeat, but just as often due to their bankrupting their nation with their arrogant lust to be the "leader of the world." No exceptions. It's always been that way (see the Fact Finder question below to understand the major "strong man" empires that are found in the Holy Scriptures).
Prophecy also describes an end-time, self-righteous, Satan-empowered thug who won't merely claim to be the "leader" of all other nations, but who will actually claim to be God. No one will be able to stop his superpower death machine - until Jesus Christ comes to destroy it, and him. Truth, and true justice, always win in the end.
"Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling to meet him, we beg you, brethren, not to be quickly shaken in mind or excited, either by spirit or by word, or by letter purporting to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God."
