Sapphire is a precious blue stone that has been regarded as a gem by mankind since very early times. It is also regarded as such by The Lord. In the Holy Scriptures, sapphire is consistently described as being around the Throne of God. Sapphire was one of the designated precious stones of the high priest's breastplate (which were symbolic of the tribes of Israel i.e. "the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel" - see below), the "foundations" which will be fulfilled with the coming of the New Jerusalem (see the Fact Finder question below).

"There was under His feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone"

Sapphire was one of the precious stones set in the high priest's "breastplate of judgment" (Exodus 28:15 KJV; see Aaron for an illustration of the breastplate of precious stones).

"And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius [see Sardine Stone], a topaz, and a Carbuncle: this shall be the first row. And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their enclosings."

"And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes." (Exodus 28:17-21 KJV)

When Moses (see also The Education Of Moses) and the others "saw the God of Israel," "under His feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone":

"Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink" (Exodus 24:9-11 KJV)

Ezekiel's vision of cherubim included "the appearance of the likeness of the glory of The Lord" in which was, as Moses and the others saw long before, "the appearance of a sapphire stone":

"And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings. And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about."

"This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of The Lord. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake." (Ezekiel 1:25-28 KJV)

Lucifer, called "the anointed cherub that covereth" before he foolishly made himself into the corrupt and wicked Satan, was covered with precious stones, including sapphire (see also What Does Satan Look Like?).

"Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." (Ezekiel 28:13-15 KJV)

Fact Finder: Will the foundation of the coming New Jerusalem be "garnished with all manner of precious stones" (KJV) including sapphires?
