Although it's usually regarded as a modern-day term, or even a modern-day slang term, use of the English word "stuff" began centuries ago as a general term for substance or matter. The King James translation of the Holy Scriptures uses "stuff" to translate two Hebrew words, (pronounced) kel-ee which means a tool or utensil (modern-day equivalent usage: "get your stuff") and mel-aw-caw which means to employ or to function (modern-day equivalent usage: "do your stuff") and the Greek word pronounced sky-oo-os which means utensils or equipment.

"Stuff" In The Holy Bible

"Stuff" is referred to in both Bible History (examples below) and Prophecy (see the Fact Finder question below).

Gathering Stuff

"And Jacob was wroth, and chided with Laban [see Jacob and Laban]: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both." (Genesis 31:36-37 KJV)

"And Pharaoh said unto Joseph [see The Israelite Patriarchs - Joseph], Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto The Land Of Canaan; And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt [see The Land Of Goshen], and ye shall eat the fat of the land. Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours." (Genesis 45:17-20 KJV)

"If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double." (Exodus 22:7 KJV) (see also "Thou shalt not steal")

"And The Lord [see YHVH, Adonai, Jehovah, LORD] said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant [see Covenant and Testament] which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff." (Joshua 7:10-11 KJV) (see also "Thou shalt not covet")

"When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. Therefore they inquired of The Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff." (1 Samuel 10:21-22 KJV)

"And David [see King David] said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff." (1 Samuel 25:13 KJV)

"The word of The Lord also came unto me [i.e. Ezekiel The Prophet], saying, Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house. Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a rebellious house." (Ezekiel 12:1-3 KJV)
