The Future From The Past
Eschatology is derived from the Greek words (pronounced) eschatos, meaning last, and logos, meaning (in this usage) an ordered statement. Eschatology is the term that some some theologians use for the study of all of the many end-time and future events described in the Scriptures (e.g. The Return Of Jesus Christ) and all of the great amount of Prophecy that leads to them and from them. It is widely found throughout the Old (see Old Testament Fact File) and New (see New Testament Fact File) Testaments.
End Time Prophecy In The Old Testament
Although many regard the Old Testament entirely as Bible History, a very large portion of the events described in the Hebrew Scriptures are yet to happen. Examples:
"For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God" (Job 19:25-26 KJV) (see Resurrections)
"And in this mountain shall The Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory [see Death's Obituary]; and The Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for The Lord hath spoken it." (Isaiah 25:6-8 KJV)
"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time [see Never Before, Never Again]: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt [see When Will You Be Judged?]. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever." (Daniel 12:1-3 KJV)
"Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image [see Nebuchadnezzar's Dream]. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth" (Daniel 2:31-35 KJV)
"But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of The Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of The Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of The Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Micah 4:1-3 KJV) [see The Prince of Peace]
"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to The Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem [see Living Waters]; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And The Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one" (Zechariah 14:6-9 RSV)
End Time Prophecy In The New Testament
The New Testament has a great amount of eschatology throughout its entirety, some of which is paralleled by the Prophets of the Old Testament. Jesus Christ summarized much of what will precede His Return:
"And as He sat upon The Mount Of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? [see The End Of The World?]"
"And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My Name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom [see World War 3 In Prophecy]: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows."
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake [see The Great Tribulation]. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom [see The Gospel of The Kingdom of God] shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."
"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, whoso readeth, let him understand: Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains [see Who Should Flee Into The Mountains?]: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before."
"Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be [see Why Did They Face East?]. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together."
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds [see "To Meet The Lord In The Air"], from one end of heaven to the other." (Matthew 24:3-31 KJV)
