Deep and Mysterious Things
by Wayne Blank
"He reveals deep and mysterious things"
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (see Ancient Empires - Babylon) was hardly unique in his looking to astrologers for guidance; politicians have done so from the most ancient times right to the present. Nebuchadnezzar did however, at last, come to realize that astrology is a fraud, so he demanded that they not only tell him what his dream meant, but also to tell him what his dream was. Surely, if they were genuine, they could reveal it all to him. But they couldn't, and it became obvious to the king that they had been misleading him.
"The king answered, "I know with certainty that you are trying to gain time, because you see that the word from me is sure that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the times change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation." (Daniel 2:8-9 RSV)
The astrologers admitted that they were powerless to do anything more than what astrologers still do today. The king's reaction was to put them to death. Unfortunately, Nebuchadnezzar counted the truly wise men of his kingdom in the death sentence, including the prophet Daniel.
"The Chaldeans answered the king, "There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand; for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. The thing that the king asks is difficult, and none can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh."
But Daniel was not a fraud. He had no power of his own, but he knew that The Lord "reveals deep and mysterious things."
"Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
