1 Chronicles 1-3

Supplemental notes for the Daily Bible Study Bible Reading Plan

by Wayne Blank

1 Chronicles Chapter 1

The Books of Chronicles were originally written as a single volume. The Septuagint divided Chronicles into two with a title meaning "supplements" because, although covering much of the same Bible History, Chronicles provides much information that is not recorded in the Books of Kings. Overall, 1 Chronicles gives the genealogy of Israel to King David (see The United Kingdom) and then a history of David's reign, while 2 Chronicles continues through the reign of David's son Solomon (see The Division Of Israel), then the kings of The Southern Kingdom of "Judah," which were often at war against The Northern Kingdom of "Israel." The English word chronicles is derived from the Greek word for time i.e. a watch or clock is also known as a chronometer, meaninging time measure (see also How Old Is God?).

Measuring Time The line from the first adams (the name Adam originated from the Hebrew word pronounced aw-dawm which simply means man as a species i.e. Eve was as much an adam as "Adam" was), through whom all humans are descended, to the sons of Noah after The Flood, through whom all humans are also descended:

"Adam, Seth, Enosh; Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared; Enoch [see What Happened To Enoch?], Methuselah, Lamech; Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth." (1 Chronicles 1:1-4 RSV)

The sons of Shem (through whom the Hebrew people originated), Ham and Japheth:

"The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras." (1 Chronicles 1:5 RSV)

"The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan." (1 Chronicles 1:8 RSV)

"The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech." (1 Chronicles 1:17 RSV)

Abraham, from the line of Shem (1 Chronicles 1:17,27) was the father of Isaac and Ishmael.

"The sons of Abraham: Isaac [who was the son of Sarah] and Ishmael [who was the son of Hagar]." (1 Chronicles 1:28 RSV)

Abraham also had children with Keturah (see Concubines).

"The sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bore Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah." (1 Chronicles 1:32 RSV)

Isaac (see also Isaac's Faith And Obedience) and Rebekah were the parents of Esau and Jacob (The Lord changed Jacob's name to "Israel").

"Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel." (1 Chronicles 1:34 RSV)

1 Chronicles Chapter 2

The Lord changed Jacob's name to "Israel" ("Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed" Genesis 32:28 RSV). The Children of Jacob:

"These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher." (1 Chronicles 2:1-2 RSV)

Through Israel's son Judah ("Jew" is an abbreviation of Judah) came King David and Jesus Christ.

"The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah; these three Bathshua the Canaanitess bore to him. Now Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of The Lord [see YHVH, Adonai, Jehovah, LORD], and He slew him.

His daughter-in-law Tamar [see Tamar and Judah] also bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all."

The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.

The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara, five in all.

The sons of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the matter of the devoted thing; and Ethan's son was Azariah.

The sons of Hezron, that were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai.

Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah. Nahshon was the father of Salma, Salma of Boaz, Boaz of Obed, Obed of Jesse.

Jesse was the father of Eliab his first-born, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, Ozem the sixth, David the seventh; and their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail" (1 Chronicles 2:1-16 RSV)

1 Chronicles Chapter 3

King David had many children from numerous wives and concubines.

"These are the sons of David that were born to him in Hebron [see David's Capital During The Civil War]: the first-born Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, by Abigail the Carmelitess, the third Absalom, whose mother was Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith; the fifth Shephatiah, by Abital; the sixth Ithream, by his wife Eglah; six were born to him in Hebron, where he reigned for seven years and six months.

And he reigned thirty-three years in Jerusalem [see The United Kingdom]. These were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon, four by Bathshua, the daughter of Ammiel; then Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine. All these were David's sons, besides the sons of the concubines; and Tamar was their sister." (1 Chronicles 3:1-9 RSV)

The kings of Judah, after Israel split into Israel and Judah after the death of Solomon (see The Division Of Israel, until the fall of Judah to the Babylonians (see Why Babylon?):

"The descendants of Solomon: Rehoboam, Abijah his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son, Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son, Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son, Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son, Amon his son, Josiah his son. The sons of Josiah: Johanan the first-born, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum. The descendants of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son" (1 Chronicles 3:10-16 RSV)
