Zechariah Chapter 3
The book of Zechariah is profoundly rich in Messianic prophecies, Christian prophecies. Satan's opposition to the High Priest, as described in the verses below, was a foreshadow of the "temptation of Christ" (keeping in mind also that Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua): "3:1 And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him" (Zechariah 3:1 KJV). Jesus Christ is the ultimate High Priest from which the Levitical high priest (see Levites) was created only to symbolize. See What Is Jesus Christ Doing Right Now?
"3:1 And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan [see What Does Satan Look Like?] standing at his right hand to resist him. 3:2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? [see Firebrands]
3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. 3:4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him.
And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
3:5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head [see Aaron's Turban]. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.
3:6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua, saying, 3:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
3:8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch [see Root and Branch]. 3:9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
3:10 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree [a direct reference to a more famous prophecy, i.e. "4:1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
4:2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4:3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 4:4 But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it" Micah 4:1-4 KJV] (Zechariah 3:1-10 KJV)
Zechariah Chapter 4
Zerubbabel, who was of the line of David, was given to begin the rebuilding of a physical Temple that will ultimately be spiritually built once and for all by Christ (see Mansions). This prophecy speaks of that time, when also "4:14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth" (Zechariah 4:14 KJV), The Lord's "two witnesses," will carry out their 42 month ministry: "11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth" (Revelation 11:1-4 KJV)
"4:1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, 4:2 And said unto me, What seest thou?
And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: 4:3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
4:4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
4:5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be?
And I said, No, my lord.
4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
4:7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.
4:8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.
4:10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet [see The Lord's Plumb Line] in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
4:11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
4:12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
4:13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be?
And I said, No, my lord.
4:14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones [see The Last Two Prophets], that stand by the Lord of the whole earth." (Zechariah 4:1-14 KJV)
Zechariah Chapter 5
The "flying scroll" symbolized God's written Law and how it will be applied over the entire earth. Interesting, the dimensions of the scroll, "the length thereof is twenty Cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits," is identical to the dimensions of the Tabernacle's Holy Place (see The Tabernacle In The Wilderness) where the High Priest went into the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement (i.e. see Chapter 3 above) and where the lampstands (i.e. see Chapter 4 above) were located in the Holy Place, "before" the Most Holy Place.
"5:1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
5:2 And he said unto me, What seest thou?
And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
5:3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. 5:4 I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof. (Zechariah 5:1-4 KJV)
A "woman" is symbolic of the true Church of God, from which the children of God (see Born Again, How and When?) will be born (e.g. "19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready" (Revelation 19:17 KJV). The term is also used, conversely, for the great "harlot" false-Christian church: "17:4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth. 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the Martyrs of Jesus" (Revelation 17:4-6 KJV). The "woman" here is obviously the one of "wickedness."
5:5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.
5:6 And I said, What is it?
And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.
5:7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. 5:8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.
5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
5:10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?
5:11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base." (Zechariah 5:5-11 KJV)
