The Thundering Mountain
The Wilderness of Sin, also sometimes translated as the Desert of Sin, was an area that the Israelites entered just after the Exodus:
"16:1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt" (Exodus 16:1 KJV).
The sin in Wilderness of Sin is merely a transliteration of the Hebrew word pronounced seen which means thorn. Sinai, in Hebrew pronounced see-nah-ee (notice how different the English "Sinai" is pronounced in the actual Hebrew) is an expanded form of that word i.e. Sinai means thorny. The "sin" in Wilderness of Sin is not related or referring to the English word sin which means transgression against God. The Hebrew word for guilt, translated into English as sin (which originated from an old Anglo-Saxon word, not Hebrew), is pronounced kawt-taw-aw, which sounds nothing like "sin" in English.
"Mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly"
Mount Sinai takes its name from the Sinai Peninsula where it is located (see the Fact Finder question below). It was there that the LORD God delivered His Christian Commandments to His people i.e. "10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:1-4 KJV; see also The 'God Of The Old Testament').
"19:1 In the third month, when the children of Israel [see Children of Jacob and Physical and Spiritual Israel] were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. 19:2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
Fact Finder: The apostle Paul (see Paul's Ministry) said "Mount Sinai in Arabia" (Galatians 4:24 KJV). Was Paul uninformed of modern-day political geography to say that Mount Sinai was in Saudi Arabia rather than in the Sinai Peninsula? Or are those who say that Mount Sinai was in the nation known today as Saudi Arabia uninformed of the ancient political geography of Paul's time that Paul was speaking of?
