Prosperity During The Depression
The people of Israel (see Jacob's Family) entered into Egypt to escape a great famine. It enabled them to prosper amidst a time of depression.
"47:11 And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 47:12 And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families." (Genesis 47:11-12 KJV)
Ironically, the people of Israel, who were in effect refugees (see The Goshen Refugees), prospered in Egypt while the Egyptians themselves were under severe economic stress.
"47:13 And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine." (Genesis 47:13 KJV)
"Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly"
The LORD had warned the Pharaoh that a great famine would devastate the economy of Egypt (see The Pharaoh's Dreams). Wisely, the Pharaoh heeded the warning and installed Israel's son Joseph as the day to day ruler of the country (see Joseph, Prime Minister Of Egypt). When the famine came, the people of Egypt survived, albeit not without hardship.
"47:14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. 47:15 And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth.
While the Egyptian people were losing their property to their government, the people of Israel in Egypt not only held on to what they had when they first entered Egypt, but gained even more.
"47:27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly." (Genesis 47:27 KJV)
Fact Finder: The people of Israel found a physical place of safety only because they had found a spiritual "place of safety" before it. That "place of safety" exists still today. Where?
