Possessed With A Devil

The King James Version uses "devil" to translate the Greek word (pronounced) dee-ab-ol-os (from which originated the English word diabolic) and "devils" to translate the Greek word (pronounced) dah-hee-mon (from which originated the English word demon). The term "devil" is applied to Satan, or to any other of the corrupted (and corrupting) spirits, singular or plural.

"9:32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil." (Matthew 9:32 KJV)

"4:24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them." (Matthew 4:24 KJV)

"12:9 And the great dragon [see Dragons] was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (Revelation 12:9 KJV)

"Possessed with a devil"

People, and animals (as in this example), can become infected with one or more devils - that seem to have some sort of parasitic need to enter healthy (or at least much healthier than them) life. When Jesus Christ healed a human of devil possession, they pleaded to enter into some other living creatures - in this case, pigs (which didn't last them very long because when they became infected by the devils, the animals ran down into the water and were drowned).

"8:28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

8:30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. 8:31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.

8:32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. 8:33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils." (Matthew 8:28-33 KJV)

People with devils can also be found where the LORD is worshipped, as in this example of a man in Christ's own local synagogue in Capernaum:

"1:21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

1:23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 1:24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

1:25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. 1:26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

1:27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. 1:28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee." (Mark 1:21-28 KJV)

While devils cause some people to be very loud and violent, they can also render people silent and helpless, as in this example of a blind and dumb man - who was able to speak and see after Christ rid him of the devil.

"12:22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw." (Matthew 12:22 KJV)
