From Nazareth To Capernaum

Jesus Christ lived most of His human life in Nazareth, in Galilee, after His birth in Bethlehem, in Judea.

"^2:19 But when Herod [see The Herods] was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, ^2:20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

^2:21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. ^2:22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: ^2:23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene." (Matthew 2:19-23 KJV)

"And rose up, and thrust Him out of the city"

The Messiah apparently had little trouble in Nazareth until His ministry began. The people there were not yet ready for the Truth and violently rejected it and Him. "Jesus of Nazareth" could have been killed in Nazareth if He had remained there.

"^4:14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. ^4:15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

^4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read [see Aliyya and Haftara]. ^4:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, ^4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, ^4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

^4:20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. ^4:21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

^4:22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

^4:23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

^4:24 And he said, Verily, I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. ^4:25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; ^4:26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. ^4:27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

^4:28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, ^4:29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. ^4:30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way." (Luke 4:14-30 KJV)

And so the Christ moved from Nazareth to Capernaum, a fishing town on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.

"^4:31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. ^4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

^4:33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, ^4:34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

^4:35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

^4:36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. ^4:37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about." (Luke 4:31-37 KJV)

1224: The first Franciscan missionaries arrived in England. The Roman Catholic monks, also then known as "Grey Friars," were founded by Francis of Assisi 15 years before. England officially split with the papacy during the time of King Henry VIII (reigned 1509-1547), who established himself, and all future monarchs right to the present day, as head of the Church of England.

1588: Thomas Cavendish returned to England, becoming the third man to circumnavigate the globe.

1608: John Smith was elected president of the Jamestown colony council in Virginia.

1813: The Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 (1812-1815). The Treaty of Ghent ended the North American conflict, the last war fought between the United States and Canada. The two nations have now been close economic and military allies for nearly 200 years.

1846: Elias Howe patented the sewing machine. A device that permitted greater industrial production of clothing at lower cost.

1912: J. Vedrines became the first pilot to reach 100 m.p.h. in flight.

1914: The six-day Battle of the Marne ended during the First World War, halting the German advance into France.

1939: Canada declared war on Germany.

1948: American-born Mildred Gillars, accused of being Nazi wartime radio broadcaster "Axis Sally," was indicted in Washington, D.C., for treason.

1952: The Treaty of Luxembourg was signed between Israel and Germany, whereby Germany agreed to make reparation payments to Israel for German crimes against the Jews in during the Second World War. Conrad Adenauer signed for Germany. Ironically (as news events in the coming years will plainly show), the ceremony was held at the Luxembourg City Hall, a site dictated by Adenauer's presence that day to initial the pact establishing the European Coal and Steel Community - one of the first steps that led to the formation of the new, but ancient, European Union.

1963: President John F. Kennedy federalized Alabama's National Guard to prevent Governor George Wallace from using guardsmen to stop public-school desegregation.
