Born In The Tabernacles Season

by Wayne Blank

Jesus Christ was not born in winter (see the Fact Finder question below). Shepherds did not keep their sheep out in open pastureland during the cold, wet months in the land of Israel. One of the best-known "Christmas" Bible quotes is in fact proof in itself that Christ was not born at that time of year.

"2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night." (Luke 2:7-8 KJV)

"Fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths"

Most honest Biblical historians (Roman Catholic or "Protestant") freely admit that the Christ was almost certainly not born in December (which is proven by the Bible itself - again, see the Fact Finder question, The Conception Of Christ, below), but rather in early autumn, September-October on the Roman calendar, the time of the autumn Holy Days of the Messiah - which prophetically portray the coming of the Christ (see the Calendar of Christ's Holy Days; also Why Two Comings Of The Christ?). Joseph and Mary had extra reason to be joyous at the Feast of Tabernacles that year - they had a newborn child.

Evergreens The Feast of Tabernacles (see Feast Of Tabernacles: The Gospel Of The Kingdom) was observed, as the LORD instructed (i.e. as Christ instructed - see 'Before Abraham Was, I AM' and 'The God Of The Old Testament'), by the people making booths out of tree branches, including evergreen tree branches.

"23:39 Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.

23:40 And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. 23:41 And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month." (Leviticus 23:39-41)

"8:14 And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month: 8:15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. 8:16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim." (Nehemiah 8:14-16 KJV)

On the other hand, Satan is the originator of all perversion. He commonly takes a truth and corrupts it into a lie. Is it only a coincidence that, while the truth is that Christ was born at a time when people made evergreens into their homes, that Satan has not only misled the world into believing that Christ was born at the wrong time of year, he has also misled people into bringing (rather than making) evergreens into their homes? Note also that while the Israelites had a variety of trees, evergreen and deciduous, Satan's deception can only use evergreens because deciduous trees have no leaves in winter (otherwise, "Christmas" trees today may well be a variety of trees just as used in the Feast of Tabernacles).

That idolatry of the "Christmas tree" was prophesied:

"10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. 10:5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good." (Jeremiah 10:3-5 KJV)
