The Key To Unlock The Scriptures
Without the light of the Holy Spirit of God, no one can truly understand the Scriptures. Plain examples of that were the twelve apostles who, although having spent years being personally taught by Christ, were unable to "hear" what He was telling them because they did not yet have the Holy Spirit.
"16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee." (Matthew 16:21-22 KJV)
"Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures"
Even after His crucifixion, while still before the Holy Spirit came upon them, they still "as yet they knew not the scripture" - not meaning that they never heard it (they obviously did, as stated in the verse quote above), but that they did not yet have the spiritual means to "hear" it.
"20:6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, 20:7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 20:8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. 20:9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead." (John 20:6-9 KJV)
After His resurrection, "then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures" was accomplished by means of the Holy Spirit.
"24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things." (Luke 24:44-48 KJV)
Peter's first sermon was delivered at Pentecost when "they were all filled with the Holy Ghost."
"2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day [i.e. 9 am - see Hours Of The Day]. 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Fact Finder: Before his conversion by means of the Holy Spirit, was the pharisee Saul (later known as Paul) unable to understand the Scriptures that he thought that he knew so well?
