Created Equal

by Wayne Blank

Although male humans (a male human, actually) were created before female humans, there was no "equal rights" struggle between men and women in the Garden of Eden. Notice that male and female humans were created, without prejudice, "in the image of God." The "one flesh" applied as much to "equality" as it did to reproduction.

"1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (Genesis 1:27 KJV)

"2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (Genesis 2:24 KJV)

"Inequality" Began With Satan and Sin

There has been much controversy as to why Satan sought to mislead humans into being sinners by approaching the woman, but it's actually an irrelevant question for Adam and Eve. As stated in the Scriptures quoted above, they were created equally in God's own image. It didn't matter which one Satan "got to." But even so, the man was with the woman when Satan convinced Eve to disobey God ("she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her," see below). Adam was an equal, and present, although apparently silent, participant in "falling" for Satan's lies (half-truths, actually).

The Holy Scriptures

"3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made [see Christ The Creator]. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons." (Genesis 3:1-7 KJV)

When the humans chose to disobey God, it truly was "paradise lost." Both of them, and humans ever since, have lived lives of inequality that they created for themselves by sin. The "in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children" and "he shall rule over thee" was not natural for how God created women.

"3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." (Genesis 3:16 KJV)

Whereas before the male and female worked together, thereafter the man was also unequal. He was required to work alone, with constant adversity and competition.

"3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." (Genesis 3:17-19 KJV)

The good news ("Gospel" means good news) is that inequality, of all kinds, will end in the Kingdom of God. Paradise is going to return.

"3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (Galatians 3:28-29 KJV)
