The Saviour And The Scapegoat
On the Day of Atonement, two goats were used to symbolize a prophecy of a future event. One of the goats was sacrificed, while the other was taken out into the wilderness where it would live the rest of its life in oblivion.
"16:7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD [see YHVH, Adonai, Jehovah, LORD; see also 'The God Of The Old Testament' and 'Before Abraham Was, I AM'] at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 16:8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. 16:9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. 16:10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness." (Leviticus 16:7-10 KJV)
The Sacrifice Of Christ And The Imprisonment Of Satan
The blood of the sacrificed goat was taken by the high priest and sprinkled on the atonement cover (see the Fact Finder to understand Who it also represents) of The Ark Of The Covenant inside The Most Holy Place of The Tabernacle In The Wilderness once per year on the Day of Atonement.
"16:15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil [see Why Was It Torn?], and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat" (Leviticus 16:15 KJV)
That ceremony depicted the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our High Priest, entering The Throne Room of God to make atonement for humanity once for all time.
"8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens [see What Is Jesus Christ Doing Right Now?]" (Hebrews 8:1 KJV)
The "scapegoat" (i.e. the Azazel goat, pronounced in Hebrew as aw-zah-zale, translated as scapegoat in the King James Version) was not killed, just as the spirit Satan cannot be killed (some mistake the scapegoat for Christ, but both Christ and the goat that represented Him were killed - and the scapegoat is identified as the instigator of all sin, not the one who pays the penalty for all sin). All of the guilt of the people was symbolically placed on the head of the scapegoat, who was then taken out into the wilderness and released where he would forever after be isolated.
"16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: 16:22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness." (Leviticus 16:21-22 KJV)
The sending of the azazel goat out into the wilderness as done by the Old Testament high priest after he returned from inside The Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle is a ceremonial preview of Jesus Christ sending Satan into the abyss which will be done after His Return from the Throne Room of God The Father.
Fact Finder: What was the Mercy Seat actually "covering"?
