When The Tree Is Green
"For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"
The English word "green" originated from an Anglo-Saxon word, grene, that meant to grow, or growing. The colour was so-named from plants that appear green primarily due to chlorophyll - a God-created substance that enables plants to produce food and energy from sunlight (a chemical process that scientists refer to as photosynthesis).
"Green" is used to translate a number of Hebrew words of the Holy Scriptures.
Humans and animals were created as vegetarians (humans didn't become meat-eaters until after the Flood; Genesis 9:3).
"1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
It's ironic that while the Israelites entered Egypt to escape a famine in the land of Canaan (see A Biography Of Jacob: Israel In Egypt), they left Egypt four centuries later as a famine in Egypt was about to begin, caused by a locust plague that left "not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt."
"10:13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 10:14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. 10:15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt." (Exodus 10:13-15 KJV)
"Green ears" of grain were naturally available at the time of Passover, which is the basis from which Pentecost is correctly counted (see Pentecost: Unto The Morrow After The Seventh Sabbath).
"23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S passover. 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 23:7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 23:8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
Heathens have always worshipped the Creation, rather than the Creator. That included the worship of "green trees." The Israelites were commanded to remove such idolatry when they took possession of the land, but they later did the very same thing themselves (see also The Tree Huggers Of Israel And Judah).
"12:2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:
In the world such as it is, the evil may seem to be prospering "like a green tree," but they are merely producing poisonous fruit and firewood.
"37:34 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. 37:35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree." (Psalm 37:34-35 KJV)
At the time of the Crucifixion, amidst the murderous frenzy, the Messiah prophesied how if things can be so evil in the relatively good times, humanity will be far worse in the time of spiritual drought.
"23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
Most of the end-time wrath will come upon the infrastructure of the kingdoms that Satan built through his rebellious influence. Just as the plague upon the Pharaoh at the time of the Exodus devastated his crops, so too the wrath at the end will target trees and grass of Satan's world.
"8:1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 8:4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. 8:5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. 8:6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
Notice that the wrath describes letting humanity loose upon itself that includes man-made war machines - "locusts" made of metal that can burn people on the ground. The good news is that the destruction of green trees and plants will be limited - and that it will end on the day of Christ's return, after which the Earth will again be made into a verdant Paradise
"9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
