When The Tree Is Green

"For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"

The English word "green" originated from an Anglo-Saxon word, grene, that meant to grow, or growing. The colour was so-named from plants that appear green primarily due to chlorophyll - a God-created substance that enables plants to produce food and energy from sunlight (a chemical process that scientists refer to as photosynthesis).

"Green" is used to translate a number of Hebrew words of the Holy Scriptures.

Green Trees

  • the Hebrew word pronounced yeh-rek, which means the yellowish-green colour of young vegetation

  • the Hebrew word pronounced lawkh, which means fresh, or undried

  • the Hebrew word pronounced raw-awn-awn, which means to be flourishing

  • the Hebrew word pronounced karpac, which means a green vegetable

  • the Hebrew word pronounced raw-tobe, which means moist with sap

  • the Hebrew word pronounced deh-sheh, which means a tender sprout

  • the Hebrew word pronounced pawg, which means green, as in unripe

Humans and animals were created as vegetarians (humans didn't become meat-eaters until after the Flood; Genesis 9:3).

"1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed [see Seed-Bearing Plants: For Food Or For Folly?], which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so." (Genesis 1:27-30 KJV)

It's ironic that while the Israelites entered Egypt to escape a famine in the land of Canaan (see A Biography Of Jacob: Israel In Egypt), they left Egypt four centuries later as a famine in Egypt was about to begin, caused by a locust plague that left "not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt."

"10:13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 10:14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. 10:15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt." (Exodus 10:13-15 KJV)

"Green ears" of grain were naturally available at the time of Passover, which is the basis from which Pentecost is correctly counted (see Pentecost: Unto The Morrow After The Seventh Sabbath).

"23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S passover. 23:6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 23:7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 23:8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.

23:9 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23:10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest: 23:11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it. 23:12 And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD. 23:13 And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savour: and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin. 23:14 And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

23:15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: 23:16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD." (Leviticus 23:5-16 KJV)

Heathens have always worshipped the Creation, rather than the Creator. That included the worship of "green trees." The Israelites were commanded to remove such idolatry when they took possession of the land, but they later did the very same thing themselves (see also The Tree Huggers Of Israel And Judah).

Green Trees

"12:2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:

12:3 And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.

12:4 Ye shall not do so unto the LORD your God." (Deuteronomy 12:2-4 KJV)

"14:22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.

14:23 For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree.

14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel." (1 Kings 14:22-24 KJV)

In the world such as it is, the evil may seem to be prospering "like a green tree," but they are merely producing poisonous fruit and firewood.

"37:34 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. 37:35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree." (Psalm 37:34-35 KJV)

"52:8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever." (Psalm 52:8 KJV)

At the time of the Crucifixion, amidst the murderous frenzy, the Messiah prophesied how if things can be so evil in the relatively good times, humanity will be far worse in the time of spiritual drought.

"23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

23:25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

23:27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

23:28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

23:30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

23:31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?" (Luke 23:24-31 KJV)

Most of the end-time wrath will come upon the infrastructure of the kingdoms that Satan built through his rebellious influence. Just as the plague upon the Pharaoh at the time of the Exodus devastated his crops, so too the wrath at the end will target trees and grass of Satan's world.

War Locust

"8:1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 8:4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. 8:5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. 8:6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

8:7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; 8:9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

8:13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!" (Revelation 8:1-13 KJV)

Notice that the wrath describes letting humanity loose upon itself that includes man-made war machines - "locusts" made of metal that can burn people on the ground. The good news is that the destruction of green trees and plants will be limited - and that it will end on the day of Christ's return, after which the Earth will again be made into a verdant Paradise

"9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

9:7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

9:12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

9:13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 9:14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 9:15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. 9:16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

9:17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. 9:18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 9:19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts." (Revelation 9:1-21 KJV)

1303: When German king Albrecht (Albert) obtained confirmation of his election from Pope Boniface VIII, he swore an oath of obedience to the papacy, and promised that none of his sons would be elected German king without papal consent (see Emperors and Popes).

1492: The Papacy and the Roman Catholic king and queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, granted the Italian sailor Christopher Columbus (actual name in Italian: Cristoforo Colombo) his commission of exploration to the "New World." As shown on the map, the four voyages of Columbus were actually limited to the area of the islands in the Caribbean, not to what is today called "America" (see also Thanksgiving In History and Prophecy).

Voyages of Christopher Columbus 1513: Edmund de la Pole, the Yorkist pretender to the throne of England, was executed on the orders of King Henry VIII.

1527: Henry VIII and King Francis of France signed the Treaty of Westminster.

1563: Jews were expelled from France by order of King Charles VI.

1725: Spain withdrew from the Quadruple Alliance.

1803: The treaty was signed for the Louisiana Purchase. France, under Napoleon, found itself requiring the funds for Napoleon's European wars of conquest (when Britain was at war with the U.S. during the War of 1812-14, Britain was also at war to stop Napoleon in Europe; to Britain, the War of 1812 was a relative "side show" from the great war in Europe against Napoleon at the same time).

1966: The "Church of Satan" was established at the Black House in San Francisco, California.

1975: In South Vietnam, with the last of the U.S. military forces and diplomatic (i.e. CIA and mercenary "contractors") personnel having evacuated the previous day, President Minh announced an unconditional surrender to the Vietcong, ending the 20th Century's longest civil war. Vietnam became a single country again, after having been divided by imperial France earlier in the 20th century - which triggered the civil war that the U.S. involved itself in later, in the 1960s.

1980: Terrorists seized the Iranian Embassy in London.

1980: Queen Juliana of the Netherlands signed the Act of Abdication, ending 31 years as monarch. She was succeeded by Queen Beatrix.
