The Christian Feast Of Trumpets: The First Day Of Salvation
"That spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ"
A "trumpet" has been known to Bible history and prophecy since ancient times. When the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai (see Paul's Geography Lesson), He did so with "the trumpet exceeding loud":
"19:16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
Who was "the LORD God" Who led the Israelites to Sinai, before He gave them His Ten Commandments there on Mount Sinai? Jesus Christ i.e. "that Rock was Christ" (see Genesis 1: In The Beginning Was The Word and The Kingdom Of The LORD God).
"10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:1-4 KJV)
Later, when the LORD gave instructions for His true Christian Holy Days (see Holy Day Calendar with Sermons and Studies), the Feast of Trumpets was specified as one of them.
"23:23 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23:24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation." (Leviticus 23:23-24 KJV)
"For the LORD Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first"
The Feast of Trumpets holy day is an observed prophecy of the Messiah's coming to rule the earth (the "Thy Kingdom Come" in the famous "Lord's Prayer"). The first resurrection (see the Fact Finder question below) will occur on that day.
"15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God [see What Was The Lesson Of John 3:16?]; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
As described in the opening paragraphs, the return of Jesus Christ will mark the time when God's Law, as summarized by His Ten Commandments, will be delivered unto all the earth. The Feast of Trumpets portrays the coming of the Messiah, Who will rule the Kingdom of God from "the mountain" (see Moriah: Separating The Wheat From The Chaff).
"4:1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. 4:2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion [see Zionism], and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4:3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Micah 4:1-3 KJV)
Where will it all begin?
The Mount of Olives, or "the mount called Olivet," is one of the most famous places of Bible History and Prophecy. It was the place where Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, about forty days after His resurrection (listen to our Sermon What Happened Between Passover and Pentecost?).
"1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? [see our complete series of studies for the Israelite monarchy: The Origin, The Civil War, The United Kingdom, The Division Of Israel, The Northern Kingdom, The Southern Kingdom and The Messiah; also David, Future King Of Israel]
As stated in the verses above ("this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven"), the Mount of Olives will be "ground zero" for His Return. That is plainly stated in other prophecies (e.g. "14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east" Zechariah 14:4 KJV), but He will not be alone in His return. If you are a true Christian, you will be with Him when He descends; the Mount of Olives is going to be the place on earth where your eternal life will begin.
The first resurrection (see the Fact Finder question below) will happen on the day of Christ's return, just before the descent upon the Mount of Olives. First, He will gather His people from all around the earth who will "meet the Lord in the air" i.e. His people from among the dead will be resurrected that day, while those who are alive that day will be changed to spirit (see the Fact Finder question below).
"4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus [see The Sleep Of Death; also Could Christ Return Tonight?] will God bring with him. 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 KJV)
Unfortunately (for those who try to fight Him), the return of Christ is not going to be a peaceful event. A very deceived world will not recognize what is happening (including most of the Christian-professing people of the world - see Is Your Religion Your Religion? and The Coming World Dictator). A great earthquake will also happen that day; the Mount of Olives will be split into two sections, releasing great springs of water (see also Fountains).
"14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
Those of the first resurrection, who began their eternal life on the day of Christ's return, "shall reign with Him a thousand years" - after which the rest of salvation will be accomplished.
"20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years [see What Will Heaven Be Like?].

1877: The native American warrior Crazy Horse (who led the Sioux at the Battle of the Little Bighorn) was fatally bayoneted by U.S. troops "while trying to escape" (while in chains). Crazy Horse, who surrendered to stop the genocidal slaughter of entire villages of his people, was diplomatically guaranteed that he would be allowed to live free on a reservation - but was instead transported to a prison of common white criminals where he would have spent the remainder of his life in a tiny concrete and steel cage.
1905: The Peace of Portsmouth ended the Russo-Japanese War.
1910: Marie Curie demonstrated the transformation of radium ore to metal at the Academy of Sciences in France.
1914: At the start of the First World War (1914-1918), the Treaty of London formally linked the British Empire, France and Russia as allies.
1945: Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk in the Soviet embassy in Ottawa, Canada defected with documents that revealed an active Soviet espionage system in the West. His defection resulted in 20 espionage trials and 9 convictions. Gouzenko lived in Canada under an assumed name until his death in 1982.
1969: During the Vietnam War, U.S. Army Lt. William Calley was charged with premeditated murder for the massacre of hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians (old men, women and children, including infants in their mother's arms), in the My Lai Massacre. Although later convicted, the mass murderer was released by President Nixon (a man who later resigned from office to escape criminal prosecution for crimes that he committed) to serve comfortable house arrest, where he remained for a little over three years before going free (about 2 days for each cold-blooded murder). God's True Judgment yet awaits Calley, and all other war criminals through the ages.
1972: At the Olympic Games in Munich, 11 Israeli athletes were murdered by Palestinian "Black September" terrorists.
1977: The Voyager 1 unmanned spacecraft was launched. Just over 20 years later, in 1998, it became the most distant human-made object from earth at 6,500,000,000 (6.5 billion) miles away, while continuing to travel at 39,000 miles per hour. Unless it hits something (unlikely in the great void of space), its journey will never end.
1978: The Camp David peace conference began between Israel's Menechem Begin and Egypt's Anwar Sadat, with U.S. President Jimmy Carter presiding.
1980: Switzerland's St. Gotthard Tunnel opened. At 16.2 kilometers / 10.1 miles, it is the longest highway tunnel in the world.
1984: Western Australia abolished capital punishment, the last Australian state to do so.
1997: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu ("Mother Teresa") died at age 87. The Albanian-born Roman Catholic nun was known for her work with the "poorest of the poor" in India. She was awarded the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
