Matthew 12: Who Observed The First Christian Sabbath?

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God ... All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us"

The one and only true Christian Sabbath (see Why Observe The True Sabbath? to understand how the Roman "sun day" happened) was created by "the LORD God" on the seventh day of Creation (see In The Beginning Was The Word; also What Did Jesus Tell John About Creation? and The Spirit Of Creation).

"2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." (Genesis 2:1-3 KJV)

The "LORD God" was sent by the Father to do the Work of Creation. The "LORD God," Who is also "the Word of God," was later born as Jesus Christ (see also The Identity Of The LORD God and The LORD God Our Saviour).

Heaven

"1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made ... 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." (John 1:1-3,14 KJV)

"1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven." (Colossians 1:12-20 KJV)

The true Sabbath did not originate with the Israelites - it originated, at the time of Creation, by the LORD, before any Israelites existed. Even then, the LORD, Who was later born as Jesus Christ, was the first and only to fully observe the first Sabbath because the Fourth Commandment is actually two Commandments.

  • Part 1 is "20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work ... 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it" (Exodus 20:9,11 KJV)

  • Then, Part 2 is "20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:" (Exodus 20:10 KJV)

The first humans were created on the sixth day, as part of the LORD's Work. They didn't work for the previous six days, and therefore did not have anything to rest from on the first Sabbath - although, being yet sinless, they would not have sinned by not keeping the day Holy to the LORD. Humans did not become rebels until later (see Where Did True and False Prophets Originate? and Who Invented Camouflage?).

By the time of the Exodus, the LORD, Who was later born as Jesus Christ, commanded the Israelites, and everyone else, to observe His Sabbath. The Holy Scriptures again plainly state that the LORD God was Jesus Christ.

Israel From Space

"10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 10:9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents." (1 Corinthians 10:1-9 KJV)

By the time of the birth of the Messiah as a human, the leaders of Judaism (see Israel In History and Prophecy: Judaism and Israel Never Knew Purim, Hanukkah Or Judaism) had turned the LORD's Sabbath into their Sabbath - an error that much of the world has blindly accepted i.e. they call the LORD's Sabbath merely "the Jewish Sabbath" - even though the Sabbath was created long before any Jews existed (see The First Jews).

The Pharisees and Sadducees criticized the LORD for not observing His Sabbath correctly! But they were the violators because they had replaced much of what the LORD had actually commanded them, as recorded in the Holy Scriptures, with their own self-serving traditions i.e. "7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition" (Mark 7:9 KJV; see also Why Call Me, Lord, Lord, and Do Not The Things Which I Say?).

"12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 12:2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

12:3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; 12:4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 12:7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

12:9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: 12:10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

12:11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12:12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

12:13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. 12:14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him." (Matthew 12:1-14 KJV)

The Messiah's Ministry was seen and recorded by the prophets. Isaiah was one of many who described, in amazing detail, Who was coming (see What Did The Messiah Read From Isaiah That Day? and Why Did Isaiah Say The Messiah's Name Is Immanuel?). There was no excuse for the "experts" of those Holy Scriptures to not recognize the LORD's coming.

"12:15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; 12:16 And charged them that they should not make him known: 12:17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. 12:19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. 12:21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust." (Matthew 12:15-21 KJV)

The most sinister and blasphemous of the accusations that the Pharisees made against the Messiah was when they falsely proclaimed that His Holy-Spirit-empowered miracles were works of Satan. Their Judgment awaits them: "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."

Open Tomb

"12:22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 12:27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." (Matthew 12:22-37 KJV)

The prophet Jonah too not only preached the Gospel of the coming Messiah, but also provided the "three days and three nights" sign of the Messiah (see Jonah: Three Days And Three Nights).

"12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. 12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 12:44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 12:45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation." (Matthew 12:38-45 KJV)

The Messiah was born as a normal, natural human being. As such, He had a normal physical family - that themselves served as a prophecy of the eternal family of the LORD to come (see The Patriotism Prophecy).

"12:46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. 12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother." (Matthew 12:46-50 KJV)

This Day In History, March 11

222: Roman Emperor Elagabalus was assassinated, along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, by the Praetorian Guard (their palace guards) during a revolt. Their mutilated bodies are dragged through the streets of Rome before being thrown into the Tiber River (see also Whatever Happened To Those Romans?).

537: The Goths besieged Rome. The Goths were one of the tribes of Teutonic/Germanic people who invaded the Roman Empire in the 3rd to 5th centuries, eventually conquering and succeeding it. Thereafter, the Roman Empire became officially known as Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanica i.e. the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation" (see The Holy Roman Empire Of The German Nation).

German Empire

1702: The first British daily newspaper, The Daily Courant, began publication.

1708: Queen Anne withheld Royal Assent from the Scottish Militia Bill, the last time a British monarch vetoed legislation.

1810: Napoleon was married by proxy to Archduchess Marie Louise.

1812: An edict emancipated the Jews in Prussia (not to be confused with Russia; Prussia is in Germany). In reality however, the edict was evaded e.g. Jews could study law but not practice it (see also Jews - Three Tribes and Three Meanings).

1824: Amidst the ongoing genocide and homeland seizure of the Native Americans, the United States Department of War created the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

1900: British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury rejected the peace overtures offered from Boer leader Paul Kruger.

1917: General Maude with 50,000 British and Indian troops marched into Baghdad, capturing 9,000 Ottoman/Turkish prisoners (listen to our Sermon The Ottoman Empire).

1931: The communist Soviet Union banned the sale or importation of The Holy Bible.

1935: Hermann Goering established the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe.

1949: Israel's application for membership in the United Nations was approved by the Security Council (membership itself came the following May). Present-day Israel is actually the restoration of the Kingdom of Judah (see Israel In History and Prophecy: Israel Of Judah and When Will The United Kingdom Be Restored?)

1953: A U.S. bomber accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb on South Carolina, however the weapon of mass destruction did not explode due to 6 "safety" catches.

1985: Mikhail Gorbachev became head of the Soviet Union following the death of Konstantin Chernenko. At 54, he was the youngest member of the ruling Politburo.

1990: The Lithuanian Parliament proclaimed the restoration of the Baltic Republic's pre-World War Two independence from the Soviet Union. Lithuania was the first Soviet Republic to break away from Communist control.

2011: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck 130 kilometers east of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed thousands of people. The event also caused the second-worst nuclear power plant disaster in history.
