Who Would Throw A Nuclear Boomerang?

On August 6, 1945 the United States of America detonated an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The famous U.S. military photograph below shows the 20,000 foot "mushroom cloud" that was produced by the bomb - a seething holocaust of dust and ashes that included the incinerated remains of about 150,000 men, women and children.

Three days later, a second U.S. atomic bomb destroyed another Japanese city - Nagasaki. The photograph below shows the towering "mushroom cloud" from that bombing - that also included the incinerated remains of over 100,000 men, women and children.

The point of this commentary is not about the legality or morality of those bombings, but rather to consider the question of whether or not Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been bombed, with atomic weapons of mass destruction, if Japan at the time had atomic weapons of their own. Based on how such weapons have not been used in the decades since that time, the answer would seem to be no.

But perhaps a more important question - would the Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, that resulted in the U.S. entering the war (the Second World War had begun over 2 years before, in September 1939) if the U.S. had atomic weapons in 1941?

Would Japan have attacked the U.S. if they knew that retaliation would bring about the incineration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Once again, the answer would seem to be no.

So too, the "Cold War" between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. never became a hot war for the simple reason that a nuclear attack from either one would have surely resulted in the destruction of the other as well. No one wanted to throw a "nuclear boomerang."

Soviet Missile

Many today fear that Iran, if it were to obtain nuclear weapons, would "incinerate" Israel - as they publicly threaten. But Israel has had nuclear weapons since the 1960s - and everyone knows it. Any nuclear attack upon Israel would result in a swift and sure response that would incinerate the aggressor.

Would the Iranians throw a nuclear boomerang? It would seem that the answer is no. Even radical Muslims aren't that stupid.
