Church of God

The prophecy: "You shall be called by a new name which the mouth of The Lord will give"

"For Zion's [see Daughter of Zion] sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name which the mouth of The Lord will give." (Isaiah 62:1-3 RSV).

In the Words of Jesus Christ - the Church of God:

"Holy Father, keep them in Thy Name [i.e. God's Name], which Thou hast given Me, that they may be one, even as We are one. While I was with them, I kept them in Thy Name, which Thou hast given Me" (John 17:11-12 RSV)

"on this Rock I will build My church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18 RSV)
Note: Christ was speaking of Himself (not anyone else - see Did Peter Have The Primacy?), as the Son of God, as the Rock on which the Church of God was to be built: i.e. "the Rock was Christ." (1 Corinthians 10:4 RSV) (see Rock Of Ages)

Church The Church of God, the "Called-Out Ones of God"

The English word church is used to translate the original Greek word of the New Testament, pronounced ek-klay-see-ah, which means "called-out ones." They are the repentant (see Repent!), converted people who have come out from the "Babylon" of religious, political and economic confusion and corruption that exists in the world, Satan's world (see Who Still Rules The World Today?), which awaits God's wrath:

"And he called out with a mighty voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! It has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt of every foul spirit, a haunt of every foul and hateful bird; for all nations have drunk the wine of her impure passion, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich with the wealth of her wantonness." Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues." (Revelation 18:2-4 RSV)

The Church of God was sanctified with the blood sacrifice of the Son of God:

"Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the Church of God which He obtained with the blood of His Own Son." (Acts 20:28 RSV)

"to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints [What Is A Saint?] together with all those who in every place call on The Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and The Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 1:2-3 RSV)

"To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized [see Baptism] into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and all were made to drink of one Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:7-13 RSV)

Fact Finder: (a) What is the actual meaning of the word "church"? (b) God is an English word used to translate the original Hebrew (i.e. the so-called Old Testament - the Hebrew Scriptures is actually much more accurate and appropriate because much of what was written in the "Old" Testament is yet to happen e.g. First And Second Comings In Isaiah and Daniel's Statue) and Greek (i.e. the New Testament) Scriptures. What is God's Name in the original languages of The Bible?
(a) See What Is The Church? (b) See What Is God's Name?
