For The Record

Humans have been writing since the most ancient times; the Holy Bible (see By The Book) would not exist otherwise. The people who were given to write the Scriptures over those thousands of years were a series of often very different personalities, from the gregarious (e.g. Matthew) to the loners (e.g. Jeremiah), from the calm (e.g. Nehemiah) to the intense (e.g. Isaiah), from meat-eaters (e.g. Moses) to vegetarians (e.g Daniel), from single (e.g. Paul) to married (e.g. Peter), but the one thing that they all had in common is that what they wrote was not of themselves. In matters of history they simply and honestly recorded what they had been given the opportunity to witness, and in matters of law and prophecy, they wrote what they were told to, by God. The writers of the Holy Bible wrote for the record, not for, or of, themselves.

For The Record

Scroll The historic record (see Bible History) was written by actual witnesses (to understand how the meaning of "witness" changed, see Martyrs):

"Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us [Luke was referring to the writers of the other "gospels" - Matthew, Mark and John], just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed." (Luke 1:1-4 RSV)

The Law was given by God (see The First Commandment, The Second Commandment, The Third Commandment, The Fourth Commandment, The Fifth Commandment, The Sixth Commandment, The Seventh Commandment, The Eighth Commandment, The Ninth Commandment and The Tenth Commandment. Also Christian Living)

"And The Lord said to Moses, "Write these words; in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you" (Exodus 34:27 RSV)

"he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this Law, from that which is in the charge of the Levitical priests [see Levites]; and it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear The Lord his God, by keeping all the words of this Law and these statutes, and doing them" (Deuteronomy 17:18-19 RSV)

Prophecy was given to the Prophets by God (see Prophecy):

"And now, go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come as a witness for ever" (Isaiah 30:8 RSV)

"Thus says The Lord, the God of Israel: Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you" (Jeremiah 30:2 RSV)

"And The Lord answered me: "Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its time" (Habakkuk 2:2-3 RSV)

"The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His servants what must soon take place; and He made it known by sending His angel to His servant John ... write what you see in a book." (Revelation 1:1,11 RSV)
