Truth or Consequences

"And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" Satan's Language

God's Way is Life and Truth; Satan's way is endless lies and death:

"Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But, because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me." (John 8:43-45 RSV)

"the god of this world [see What Satan Fears Most] has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, Who is the likeness of God." (2 Corinthians 4:4 RSV)

Speak God's Language - The Truth

Always speaking the truth brings freedom, peace of mind and eternal life:

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." (Exodus 20:16 RSV) (see The Ten Commandments and The Ten Commandments Now?)

"Sanctify them in the truth; Thy Word is truth." (John 17:17 RSV)

"Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, putting away falsehood, let every one speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another." (Ephesians 4:22-25 RSV)

"We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God." (2 Corinthians 4:2 RSV)

"Therefore take the whole Armor Of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth" (Ephesians 6:13-14 RSV)

Truth or Consequences

There will be no liars in the Kingdom of God:

"But you yourselves wrong and defraud, and that even your own brethren. Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:8-10 RSV)

"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and every one who loves and practices falsehood." (Revelation 22:12-15 RSV)

"Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire..."

There is nothing in this world worth lying about. The old mocking children's rhyme, "Liar, liar, pants on fire..." is not entirely inappropriate, considering what is surely coming:

"the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire! But according to His promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by Him without spot or blemish, and at peace." (2 Peter 3:10-14 RSV)
