Fishers Of Men

By no coincidence, at least four of the twelve apostles (see also The Inner Circle) were fishermen:

"From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand." As He walked by the Sea Of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter [see Who Did Peter Have Authority Over?] and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him." (Matthew 4:17-22 RSV)

Only Fish Survive Floods

The Sea Of Galilee The Flood at the time of Noah extinguished all life on earth, except Noah and the humans and creatures with him in the ark, and the fish in the sea:

"And the waters prevailed so mightily upon the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; the waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, birds, cattle, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm upon the earth, and every man; everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the air; they were blotted out from the earth." (Genesis 7:19-23 RSV)

After the great Deluge, God promised that never again would there be another flood, of water, that will cover all of the earth. But another flood is coming, not of water, but of fire. It will be a planet-wide ocean of fire that will purify, but not destroy, the entire earth, once and for all, after all Judgment has been completed (see When Will You Be Judged?). Like Noah's flood, only the "fish" outside of the ark, those who have been found worthy, by repentance and obedience to God, and made spirit, will survive. Here's what The Bible plainly has to say about it:

"First of all you must understand this, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own passions and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation." They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the Word of God heavens existed long ago, and an earth formed out of water and by means of water [see Hydrogen], through which the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist have been stored up for fire, being kept until the day of Judgment and destruction of ungodly men."

"Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire! But according to His promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:3-7,11-13 RSV)

But even among the "fish" there will be a sorting of actual good and bad at the time of the "flood," those who superficially claimed to have faith on one hand (see I Did It My Way...), and those who truly had faith by their genuine obedience to God's Word on the other:

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." (Matthew 13:47-50 RSV)

"Not every one who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the Kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and do many mighty works in Your Name?' [to understand both meanings of taking God's Name in vain, see The Third Commandment] And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you evildoers.' Every one then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it." (Matthew 7:21-27 RSV)

"So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead [see Works Means Obedience]. But some one will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe - and shudder. Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, and the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness"; and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone." (James 2:17-24 RSV)
