"And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof The Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water. Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it: The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the Lawgiver, with their staves" (Numbers 21:16-18 KJV) Beeri, meaning belonging to the well, was the name of the father of the prophet Hosea (see Prophets). Another man named Beeri, a Hittite (see Hittites), was the father of one of the wives of Esau:
"The word of The Lord that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri" (Hosea 1:1 KJV) When Hagar fled from Sarah, The Lord appeared to her at a place that she called Beerlahairoi, meaning "the well of him that sees me."
"And she called the name of The Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after Him that seeth me? Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi" (Genesis 16:13-14 KJV) Isaac lived in the area of Beerlahairoi for some time; in this reference it is literally rendered "the well Lahairoi" which means the same as "Beerlahairoi" i.e. the well of Lahairoi:
"And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country" (Genesis 24:62 KJV) Beeroth, meaning wells, was one of the Hivite cities. It was later assigned to the tribe of Benjamin (see Tribal Lands, also "Land On Which You Had Not Labored").
"Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, and Bethhoglah, and the valley of Keziz ... Gibeon, and Ramah, and Beeroth" (Genesis 18:21,25 KJV) Beersheba, meaning well of the oath, or well of seven, was a well dug by Abraham. His son Isaac later re-opened it and gave it the same name. Located at the southern area of the land of Israel, and with the city of Dan in the extreme north, Dan to Beersheba became a designation for the Promised Land.
"And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves? And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well. Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both of them. Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines. And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of The Lord, the everlasting God." (Genesis 21:29-33 KJV)
