Consumption

In English-language translations of the Holy Bible, "consumption" is a term used to describe a number of situations ranging from how people may be "consumed" by serious illness (also sometimes translated as "pestilence"), or their lives may be "consumed" in a wasteful way. Most references to consumption in the Scriptures refer to people who refuse to obey God and therefore suffer due to their own stubborn carnal behavior. An ultimate consumption of unrepentant people is also coming (see the Fact Finder question below).

"I will break the pride of your power"

After the Exodus, The Lord (see also YHVH, Adonai, Jehovah, LORD) led the Israelites to their Promised Land, a "land of milk and honey." But they rebelled against The Lord and refused to enter, so The Lord turned them around and "consumed" them with 40 years wandering in the desert. With few exceptions (e.g. Joshua and Caleb), the adults of the Exodus died out in the desert - it was their children who entered the Promised Land (see A Journey Without A Destination).

Consumption By Fire

"After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. I The Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die." (Numbers 14:34-35 KJV)

"For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of The Lord: unto whom The Lord sware that he would not show them the land, which The Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey." (Joshua 5:6 KJV)

The Lord uses various forms of "consumption" to break the carnal pride of people who obey Satan rather than their Creator.

"But if ye will not hearken unto Me, and will not do all these Commandments; And if ye shall despise My statutes, or if your soul abhor My judgments, so that ye will not do all My Commandments, but that ye break My covenant [see also Covenant and Testament]: I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. And I will set My face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you."

"And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits."

"And if ye walk contrary unto Me, and will not hearken unto Me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins" (Leviticus 26:14-21 KJV)
