The Quivering Glow

by Wayne Blank

A mirage is an optical illusion in which, for example, water is seen on the surface of a blistering, dry desert. The "water" is actually a reflection of the blue-white sky (mirror is based on the same word as mirage, which can accurately be thought of as an abbreviation of mirror image) caused by hot air at the surface refracting (bending and projecting) light waves from the sky.

The Hebrew word pronounced shaw-rawb means a quivering glow on the ground i.e. a mirage. It is spoken of in the Bible in a prophecy about how the time will come when all of the world's religious illusions (see the Fact Finder question below) will be replaced by genuine "water" (see Living Waters).

"35:7 And the parched ground [i.e. shaw-rawb, mirages] shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water" (Isaiah 35:7 KJV)

"The parched ground shall become a pool"

As a whole, the world today is a "wilderness" and a "solitary place," but in the future it will all come together in Truth.

The Holy Scriptures

"35:1 The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. 35:2 It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the LORD, and the excellency of our God. 35:3 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. 35:4 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you." (Isaiah 35:1-4 KJV)

At that time, not only will the eyes of the blind be opened, but those who thought that they could see will at last be truly able to see when "the parched ground" will no longer cast mirages that hide the Truth.

"35:5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 35:6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. 35:7 And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes." (Isaiah 35:5-7 KJV)

Just as in desert places, mirages are also seen on summertime highways. In the future, the Way ("14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life" John 14:6 KJV) will be perfectly clear.

"35:8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. 35:9 No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: 35:10 And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." (Isaiah 35:8-10 KJV)
