The Finger Of God

by Wayne Blank
See also 1 Year Holy Bible Reading Plan

The English word "finger" originated from an old Anglo-Saxon (i.e. the part of Germany in and from which the English people originated) that meant to grasp, as by the digits of the hand (numbers came to be called "digits" because people used their fingers to count). Interestingly, the English word "fang" originated from the very same root word as "finger" i.e. things could be grasped with the teeth just as with the fingers - something that humans still sometimes do when they have "their hands full."

The Hebrew word of the Holy Scriptures that is usually translated as "finger" is pronounced ets-bawh. It literally means to grasp, but can be used to refer to either fingers or toes - although in the Scriptures it means finger.

The LORD has "fingers" i.e. the Creation was "the work of Thy fingers" (see the Fact Finder question below).

"8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet." (Psalm 8:3-6 KJV)

"This is the finger of God"

As stated above, the "finger" of God is used as an analogy for His Spirit, the Power of Creation and Rule. Surprisingly, it's something that even some of those who do not yet seek to obey Him understand - as in this case when the LORD gave the arrogant Pharaoh His "finger" i.e. "8:19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God" (see also Plagues Of The Pharaohs: Past and Future).

The Holy Scriptures

"8:19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said." (Exodus 8:19 KJV)

Humans grasp writing instruments in their fingers. The LORD writes with His Finger alone: "two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God."

"31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God." (Exodus 31:18 KJV)

Jesus Christ was "the LORD God" spoken of in the verse quotes above (see 'Before Abraham Was, I AM'). It was not something new that He later "with the finger of God cast out devils" (see Devils).

"11:14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

11:15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils [see Baal-zebub and Beelzebub].

11:16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

11:17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 11:18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. 11:19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

11:20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you." (Luke 11:14-20 KJV)
