The River Euphrates: An Invitation To Armageddon
The English rendering of "Euphrates," a river in what is today central Iraq, is based upon the New Testament Greek name for the river, pronounced yoo-frat-ace, which means sweet water. In the Old Testament Hebrew (although most English translations use the Greek word for the actual Hebrew word, which is completely different), the river is called by the Hebrew name pronounced per-awth, which means to break forth, or rushing. The Euphrates is also referred to in the Holy Scriptures simply as "the river" or "the great river."
"23:31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea [see also The Night Crossing] even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee." (Exodus 23:31 KJV)
"The great river Euphrates ... was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared ... he gathered them together into a place called ... Armageddon."
The "Euphrates" is first mentioned by name (keeping in mind that in the Old Testament Hebrew, "Euphrates" is not found - the Hebrew name pronounced per-awth is used) as one of the rivers of Eden.
"2:10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden [see also Christ The Creator] ; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 2:11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 2:12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 2:13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 2:14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates." (Genesis 2:10-13 KJV)
Later, the Euphrates is (as also stated in the verses quoted above when it was merely called "the river") directly included as a boundary of the land covenant made with Abraham and his descendants, and "Israel" as a whole.
"15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram [see also What Made Abraham Righteous?], saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates." (Genesis 15:18 KJV)
When Israel (see The Northern Kingdom) and Judah (see The Southern Kingdom) later divided (see The Division Of Israel) and became corrupt, both kingdoms fell to, and were exiled to, nations of the Euphrates - Assyria and Babylon.
"17:5 Then the king of Assyria [see Ancient Empires - Assyria] came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. 17:6 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria [see The Galilee Captivity], and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. 17:7 For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods." (2 Kings 17:5-7 KJV)
The Euphrates River is also described in great of events of the future. The famous army of 200 million will cross the Euphrates on its way to fight the returning Messiah (see The Messiah, The Coming World Dictator and The Mount Sinai Prophecy).
"9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit [see also The Bottomless Pit]; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
"Armageddon" is spoken of directly in relation to a prior event at the Euphrates i.e. "the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared" ... "And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon."
"16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
