The First Rock Star
A dictionary definition, from the The Consolidated Webster Encyclopedic Dictionary (published about 1950), of the English word "rock":
"A large mass of stony matter; a large fixed stone or crag; the stony matter constituting the Earth's crust, as distinguished from soil, mud, sand, gravel, clay or peat."
Compare that original, intended meaning of the word "rock" with how the word has become commonly defined today. Examples from the online Urban Dictionary on July 7, 2012:
"1: a form of cocaine; 2: a basketball; 3: a stone; 4: a type of music; 5: a fake [profanity omitted] wrestler"
Further, a dictionary definition, from the The Consolidated Webster Encyclopedic Dictionary (published about 1950), of the English word "star":
"Any celestial body except the moon, the planets, comets, meteors and nebulae; more strictly, any of the bodies that shine by their own light, as the sun, situated at immense distances from us, and doubtless, like our sun, the centers of systems similar to our own."
Compare that original, intended meaning of the word "star" with how the word has become commonly defined today. Examples from the online Urban Dictionary on July 7, 2012:
"1. A symbol used for flags and others. The one made from one trait with 5 spikes being the typical one; 2. What cartoon characters see turning around their head after being hit on it; 3. A sun that isn't ours; 4. A celebrity."
The term "rock star" is not found in The Consolidated Webster Encyclopedic Dictionary (published about 1950), however it is a common term today. Examples from the online Urban Dictionary on July 7, 2012:
"Someone who is in a popular rock band. Some of these guys live the craziest life that exists. They tour around the world to play their music while getting worshipped by their fans. After the concert they [profanity omitted] a bunch of groupies and leave for the next gig while taking some drugs."
For whatever sociological or psychological (or sociopathic or psychopathic, considering the usual, even inevitable, wild and bitter fruit of the changes) reasons, words tend to degenerate in meaning, at least in "liberal minded" people. By definition, "conservative" means to conserve something, while "liberal" means to liberate - a nice-sounding term, but which is most-often done by perverting and unrighteously destroying what was established, by replacing the original with something else that bears little or no fidelity to the original (i.e. origin-al). The definition changes in the above examples show how it's done - and the "Babylon" result (to "confound their language").
What about the Holy Bible? Have there been efforts to pervert the true meaning of "rock" and "star" in the Word of God too? Yes, and yes, considering that "Word of God" means both the written Scriptures and the LORD God (see What Does Word of God Mean To You? and Who Is The LORD?).
"He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of Truth and without iniquity, just and right is He"
The LORD (see Who Is The LORD?) is the original Rock from which and by Whom all things were created. He is the foundation of all that is right: "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."
"32:1 Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. 32:2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb [see also Herbs Of The Garden], and as the showers upon the grass:
But, as is recorded over and over throughout Bible history, people responded to the blessings that the LORD gave to them with unfaithfulness and idolatry. They "lightly esteemed the Rock of salvation" and "provoked him to jealousy with strange gods," by which they "sacrificed unto devils."
"32:15 But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. 32:16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. 32:17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. 32:18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee." (Deuteronomy 32:15-18 KJV)
King David was one who understood Who the Rock was - to David, the term "Rock" meant only the LORD.
"2:2 There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God." (1 Samuel 2:2 KJV)
Long before David, Moses knew "that Rock was Christ," while others, as we will get to, made their own lifeless rocks. The lesson was the same for ancient times or modern - "we should not lust after evil things."
"10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
Moses and David used the same terminology - Rock, LORD, Deliverer, Saviour.
"22:1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
Over the centuries, others made other "rocks" for themselves. One of the most infamous was the golden calf at Mount Sinai, while Moses was up on the mountain with the LORD. Notice that they called the golden calf "thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt." They then held a "peace" festival (they "brought peace offerings") to their self-declared and self-worshiping "rock," with gross immorality and "noise" music ("the noise of them that sing" Exodus 32:18 KJV).
"32:1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
Who or what are the other "rocks" that some people worship instead of the true Rock? "For their rock is not as our Rock," but "is the poison of dragons" (see The Dragons Of The Bible).
"32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. 32:32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: 32:33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps." (Deuteronomy 32:31-33 KJV)
As well-meaning as they may be, there are many millions of "good Christian people" who are in fact not yet Christian because they have been misled and abused by "ravening wolves in sheep's clothing" (see The Messiah's Warning About Christian Charlatans). Notice carefully as well that the word "strait" ("the strait gate") that the Messiah used in His warning means a narrow passage (Strait: "A narrow channel of the sea joining two larger bodies of water"), which isn't necessarily "straight" (Straight: "without bends or curves").
"7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate [see The Strait Gate]: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
"I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning Star"
One of the earliest prophecies of the coming Messiah stated "there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel."
"24:15 And he took up his parable [see also Parables Of The Messiah's Return], and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: 24:16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
An even earlier Messianic prophecy plainly identified the LORD God, the Rock, as that Star.
"49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah [see Where Is The Messiah's Royal Line?], nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be." (Genesis 49:10 KJV)
Many are familiar with the famous "star of Bethlehem," but the star was there to signify a far greater guiding light, that Star that was prophesied to come ("a Star out of Jacob"), for "we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."
"2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem [see Why Did The Magi Come?], 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
For their own safety, the Magi were instructed not to return home by the way that the star had guided them to Bethlehem. Did the star then guide them safety back home, along a route that they knew not?
"2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
The Messiah was born as the "good shepherd," but His being a carpenter itself signified someone who builds upon a foundation of rock. And notice the plain-statement connection between when He "laid the foundations of the earth" and how "the morning stars sang together" in joy at the sight of the Creation.
"38:1 Then the LORD answered Job [see Lessons Of Perseverance And Faith] out of the whirlwind, and said,
The "stars" in the above verses obviously refer to angels. Naming the stars has a dual meaning in the Holy Scriptures; actual stars and constellations are all given names (e.g. "9:8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. 9:9 Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south" Job 9:8-9 KJV), but so too, as we will read, are all of the angels.
"147:4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names." (Psalm 147:4 KJV)
One of the those "stars," angels, was originally named Lucifer, which means Light Bringer. Lucifer was created as a righteous, obedient, and entirely free, angel - who, tragically for him. decided to rebel against the King. Keeping in mind the dual meanings of stars, as we've read, his "I will exalt my throne above the stars of God" didn't refer merely to sitting above all of the literal stars, but reigning over all of the angels and the Star Who is the LORD ("I will be like the most High"). The result of his failed rebellion was that he was cast down to the Earth where he has been the Satanic influence for all sorts of idolatrous "rocks" and "stars" ever since.
"14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." (Isaiah 14:12-15 KJV)
Satan fell "from the midst of the stones of fire," the stars of heaven, like a burning-out meteorite. The Messiah witnessed and described it as "10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." (Luke 10:18 KJV)
"28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God [see The Garden In Eden]; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Satan, and the angels that rebelled with him, fell because he was defeated by righteous angels under the command of Michael: "there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels" and so Satan "was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." All of those "stars" came to Earth.
"12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman [see Brides From Their Sides] clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon [see The Dragons Of The Bible] stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
The result of those "stars" that came to Earth?
"11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." (2 Corinthians 11:13-15 KJV)
The perverted influence of those "stars" has produced the spirit of idolatry of this world.
"5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves." (Amos 5:26 KJV)
The irony is that the fall of all of those "stars" have brought a spiritual darkness to the world. It's the reason that the world is the "Babylon" that it is today (see What And Where Is Babylon Today?) and it's the reason that the true Star is coming as "a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts."
"1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." (2 Peter 1:19-21 KJV)
Until the Messiah comes, His people, as they are converted one by one, are "the light of the world" - as we will read, righteous "stars" awaiting the Star to come.
"5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:14-19 KJV)
The Messiah encouraged His people to "hold fast till I come," upon which "I will give him the morning star."
"2:25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
What is that "morning star"? Salvation, the beginning of the first day of Eternity, in which "they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament," "as the stars for ever and ever."
"12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt [see When And Where Your Eternal Life Will Begin and The Eighth Day: What Does It Mean?]. 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever." (Daniel 12:2-3 KJV)
The LORD is the true Rock, the true Star, "Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last."
"22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
