Liberty Under God or Liberty Under Satan?
"Ye have not hearkened unto Me, in proclaiming liberty ... So behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine"
"Liberty" originated from a French word, liberte, which itself originated from a Latin word, libertas, all of which are now most-often defined as "personal freedom from servitude, confinement, or oppression." The English word liberal originated from the same root word as liberty (see the Fact Finder question below).
The Holy Scriptures have much to say about the two kinds of liberty that humans may choose for themselves: Godly lawful liberty, in which everyone is truly free because of the rights that the Law of God guarantees them, or Satanic lawless liberty, in which everyone is "free" to do whatever they please, to whomever they please - a "law of the jungle" predatory freedom.
Consider what happens when humans cross the line, from lawful liberty under the LORD, to lawless liberty of themselves - from "right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour" down to "Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty ... behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine."
"34:15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: 34:16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
Satanic "liberty" isn't freedom. It only produces more and more "vanity," "lust," "corruption" and ironically, more "bondage."
"2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage." (2 Peter 2:18-19 KJV)
"So shall I keep Thy Law continually for ever and ever. And I will walk at liberty: for I seek Thy precepts"
Freedom under the LORD is pure and beautiful. The Law of God, and those who live by it, will continue in existence "for ever and ever."
"119:44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. 119:45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts." (Psalm 119:44-45 KJV)
The prophet Isaiah (see also What Did Isaiah Know About Jesus Christ?) was given to preach the Gospel of liberty to people who had squandered it for themselves because of their lawlessness. Their "beauty" had turned to "ashes."
"61:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified." (Isaiah 61:1-3 KJV)
"4:14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 4:15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
"3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." (2 Corinthians 3:17-18 KJV)
The Liberty that produces genuine freedom is based upon obedience to God's Law.
"1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." (James 1:25 KJV)
In the Holy Bible, "works" means obedience to God's Law (see Works Means Obedience).
"2:12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
True Christians aren't rebellious criminals in their freedom: "As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God."
"2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims [see Strangers And Pilgrims], abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

With a great roar, the shock wave flattened trees over an area of several thousand square kilometers. No one was killed in the uninhabited area, although a man standing 40 miles away was knocked down unconscious by the shock wave. Seismometers around the world recorded it. The event is believed to have been caused by a comet or asteroid that shattered and exploded about 5 miles above the earth's surface.
