The LORD's Two Witnesses Versus Satan's Two Witnesses

"These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth"

The return of Jesus Christ to establish the Kingdom of God on Earth (see Repent, For The Kingdom Of Heaven Is At Hand) will be preceded by a 42-month period of great tribulation. During that time, the entire world will come to know four people, two on each side, who will miraculously dispute the LORD's Truth versus Satanic deception. At the end of the 42 month period, all four of them will be killed - with the "two witnesses" of the LORD resurrected to eternal life, and the "beast" and his "great false prophet" cast into the lake of fire where they will be obliterated forever.

The "two witnesses" will "prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days" (42 months), after having been given the miraculous means to defend themselves: "if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed."

The Streets of Jerusalem

"11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein [see The Holy Place In History And Prophecy and The Temple Vessel Prophecies Today]. 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth [see Who Is The LORD?].

11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will." (Revelation 11:1-6 KJV)

When their ministry has been completed, the LORD will permit the martyrdom of His two witnesses. Their dead bodies will be left in the streets of Jerusalem "three days and an half."

"11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified [see A History Of Jerusalem: Abomination Of Desolation].

11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth." (Revelation 11:7-10 KJV)

The two witnesses will then be resurrected and ascend to heaven, just like the Messiah did, not far from where the Messiah did, from which they will then return with the Messiah.

Clouds

"11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. 11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud [see What Happened When The Messiah Arrived In Heaven?]; and their enemies beheld them.

"11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven [see What Is The Day Of The LORD?].

11:14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly." (Revelation 11:11-14 KJV)

The martyrdom and resurrection of the two witnesses will occur at the same time as the final "abomination of desolation" (see the Fact Finder question below).

"11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever [see The Coming World Dictator and The Church: Mission Accomplished].

11:16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, 11:17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament [see Israel In History and Prophecy: The Temple]: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail." (Revelation 11:15-19 KJV)

"There was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months"

The two witnesses of the LORD will be opposed by the Satan-empowered "beast" - a great military ("Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him") and political power over the entire Earth ("all the world wondered after the beast").

The Beast

"13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea [see From What Sea Has The Beast Risen?], having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy [see Blaspheming The Name Of God].

13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon [see The Dragons Of The Bible] gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

13:4 And they worshipped the dragon [see Who's Hiding On Your Wall?] which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" (Revelation 13:1-4 KJV)

The Church of Rome was created by the Emperors of Rome, who maintained superior authority over the Papacy (see Emperors and Popes). So it will be in the end-time, with the "Beast" committing the greater "blasphemy against God."

"13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle [see Where Is Your Tabernacle? and The Feast Of Tabernacles In History And Prophecy], and them that dwell in heaven.

13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints [see Can You See The Church? and The Church In The End Time], and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." (Revelation 13:5-8 KJV)

The political / military "beast," just like the Caesars centuries before (e.g. see Nero's Torches), will cause great persecution upon the true Church of God - the people, all around the world, who obey the Word of God (see What Does Word of God Mean To You?).

"13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. 13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints [see Why Does The LORD Permit Persecution?]." (Revelation 13:9-10 KJV)

The "Beast" will have his "great false prophet" who will lead the state worship of the "Beast" - like so many others, ancient and modern, the "beast" will claim to be "divine."

Papacy

"13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon [see The Messiah's Warning About Christian Charlatans].

13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name [see What Is The Mark Of The Beast?].

13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." (Revelation 13:11-19 KJV)

The 42-month Satanic rampage of the "beast" and his "great false prophet" will end at the return of Jesus Christ, a few days after the two witnesses had been martyred, as we read above.

"19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." Revelation 19:11-16 KJV)

The world of "Babylon" (see What And Where Is Babylon Today?) will attempt to fight the Messiah at His return ("the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war"), but "the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone."

Clouds

"19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone [see The Lake Of Fire Into An Ocean Of Fire - When?].

19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh." (Revelation 19:17-21 KJV)

Satan will also be put away on the day of Christ's return.

"20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season [see Sending Away The Escapades Goat].

20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls [see What Does The Bible Really Say About Your Soul?] of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years [see Repent, For The Kingdom Of Heaven Is At Hand, The Constitution Of The Kingdom Of God and The Church In The Kingdom Of God].

20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished [see The Eighth Day: What Does It Mean?].

This is the first resurrection [see The Harvest Prophecies and When And Where Your Eternal Life Will Begin]. 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years." (Revelation 20:1-6 KJV)

This Day In History, July 12

100 BC: Julius Caesar (see A History Of Jerusalem: Pompey And The Caesars) was born (historians differ over whether the date was July 12 or 13).

Julius Caesar 927: England was unified by Athelstan.

1191: The armies of the Third Crusade (1189-92), led by England's King Richard ("The Lionhearted"), captured the Syrian seaport of Acre (see Constantine's Crusades In History And Prophecy).

1290: Jews were expelled from England by order of King Edward I.

1543: England's King Henry VIII married Catherine Parr, his sixth, and last, wife.

1580: The Ostrog Bible, one of the earliest Bibles in a Slavic language, was published (see also The Word Of God In The Tongues Of Man).

1609: Henry Hudson first saw the North American continent.

1690: The Battle of Boyne, the most important date on the Northern Ireland Unionist calendar; on that date, William of Orange vanquished his Catholic rival, King James II, in a victory that established England's Protestant ascendancy. It is celebrated in Northern Ireland by "Orangemen" and resented by Catholics to this day.

1691: William III defeated the allied Irish and French armies at the Battle of Aughrim, Ireland.

1704: In areas occupied by Sweden, the gentry deposed Augustus, elector of Saxony, as king of Poland and elected Stanislaw Leszczynski, the chief official of Poznan, king of Poland.

1794: British Admiral Lord Nelson lost his right eye at the siege of Calvi, in Corsica.

1806: The Confederation of the Rhine was established in Germany.

1812: During the War of 1812 (1812-1814), the U.S. invaded Canada at Windsor, Ontario.

1941: Moscow was bombed by the German Luftwaffe for the first time.

1944: Winston Churchill made the decision to allow Jews to form a military unit to fight the Nazis; 2 months later, the Jewish Brigade, 25,000 strong, was formed. Without Churchill, the Jews would never have got it, and the experience of working together at the brigade level was critical to the Jewish military success 4 years later - in the establishment of the modern state of Israel (see A History Of Jerusalem: The British Mandate, A History Of Jerusalem: Zionism and A History Of Jerusalem: War And Peace).

1974: President Richard Nixon's aides G. Gordon Liddy, John Ehrlichman and two others were convicted of conspiracy and perjury in connection with the Watergate crimes.

1994: Germany's Constitutional Court lifted the ban on use of German troops for combat missions outside of the country.
