Worship Of The Creation Rather Than The Creator

"Lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them"

The sights of the heavens are awesome and magnificent. The pure darkness of the ancient times provided early man (see Who Did God Call Adam?) with a view of the heavens that many people in the "bright lights" of the modern world never see with their own two eyes.

Marriage

The LORD (see A Biography Of Jesus Christ: The LORD God Of Creation) however is infinitely more awesome and magnificent than His Creation of the physical universe (see What Can You See In The Firmament Of The Heavens?). Nevertheless, humans have foolishly made mere idols out of the stars and planets.

Most people think of "sun worship" as what ancient "heathen" people did. Some others realize however that many of those idolatrous practices were adopted as state religions by great empires. Babylon and Rome are the most-familiar, primarily because of their "sun god" e.g. Sol Invictus of the Church of the Roman Empire (now known as the Church of Rome, or the Roman Catholic Church), which was the basis for both their choosing of December 25 for "Christmas" (the Romans celebrated the winter solstice on that date long before the birth of Christ) and their "Sun Day" that is also observed by most of the "protestant" churches (see the Fact Finder question below).

Sun God

Even the portrayal of the "halo" (a natural phenomenon of the sun that pagans used as part of their idolizing of the sun and themselves) is merely the sun behind the head.

Halo

The people of Israel were however also corrupted by sun worship. They, of all people, had no excuse because the LORD (i.e. Jesus Christ; see The LORD God Our Saviour and John's Eyewitness Of The Messiah And The LORD God) specifically commanded them to not worship the sun, moon or stars because it is idolatry, no different that religious statues or images.

"4:15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: 4:16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 4:17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, 4:18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

4:19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

4:20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day." (Deuteronomy 4:15-20 KJV)

Worship of the sun was a death-penalty offense i.e. "hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded ... even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die."

The Origin of the Halo

"17:2 If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant, 17:3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; 17:4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel: 17:5 Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.

17:6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you." (Deuteronomy 17:2-7 KJV)

Some of the kings of Israel and Judah (see Israel In History and Prophecy: Israel and Judah) attempted to reverse the idolatry, which included sun worship, of the nation. King Josiah (see Josiah of Judah) was one of the few righteous kings who cleansed the land of such idolatry.

"23:4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel. 23:5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven. 23:6 And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people. 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove." (2 Kings 23:4-7 KJV)

Nevertheless, many of the kings of Israel and Judah made themselves and their kingdom incorrigible sun worshipers. There is a prophecy about them that will be fulfilled after the return of the Messiah.

"8:1 At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves: 8:2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. 8:3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts." (Jeremiah 8:1-3 KJV)

"With their backs toward the Temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east"

The primary reason that the original Temple of the LORD was destroyed, by the LORD, was because the people had turned it into a place of idolatry, including, as documented in the verses below, sun worship. Amazingly, the illustration shows the very same sort of idolatry in a 6th century Synagogue in Israel.

Sun Worship In Israel

"8:1 And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me. 8:2 Then I beheld, and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire: from the appearance of his loins even downward, fire; and from his loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the colour of amber. 8:3 And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy. 8:4 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision that I saw in the plain.

8:5 Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.

8:6 He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations.

8:7 And he brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold a hole in the wall. 8:8 Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door.

8:9 And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. 8:10 So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about. 8:11 And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up.

8:12 Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth. 8:13 He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do.

8:14 Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD'S house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. 8:15 Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these.

8:16 And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD'S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

8:17 Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose. 8:18 Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them." (Ezekiel 8:1-18 KJV)

This Day In History, April 18

1025: Boleslaw Chrobry (known as Boleslaw I the Valiant) became the first King of Poland (in nearly all languages, the word "king" means father of a kin; the original true meaning of "patriotism" means faithful to the father; see The Patriotism Prophecy and The Only Political Party That's Going To Survive).

1328: Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV ("Louis the Bavarian"; see The Holy Roman Empire Of The German Nation) deposed Pope John XXII in Rome in a quarrel over who had superior authority (see Emperors and Popes). Peter of Corbara was appointed anti-pope as Nicholas V (see Antipopes).

1521: The trial of Martin Luther began its second day during the assembly of the Diet of Worms ("diet" is from the Latin word for day, used to refer to a daily assembly, while "Worms" is the English rendering of Vorms, a city in Germany). Luther refused to recant his anti-pope teachings, while keeping, as the "Protestant" world has done ever since, nearly all of the Church of Rome's anti-Christ doctrines (see Antichristians).

Martin Luther

1689: British Chief Justice Judge George Jeffreys died in the Tower of London. He presided over the "Bloody Assizes" following the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.

Mexico

1897: The Greco-Turkish War was declared between the Ottoman Empire and Greece.

1906: A powerful earthquake struck San Francisco (then a relatively small town). It killed more than 1,000 people and left over 200,000 people homeless.

1912: The British liner RMS Carpathia arrived at New York with 705 survivors of the RMS Titanic.

Carpathia

1943: While traveling in a bomber, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the planner of the attack on Pearl Harbor, was killed after the plane was shot down by U.S. P-38 fighters.

1946: The League of Nations was dissolved. It was replaced by the United Nations.

1949: The passing of the Republic of Ireland Act.

1954: Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser became the leader of Egypt.

1955: Albert Einstein, German-born scientist, died at age 76. He formulated the Theory of Relativity (see also Einstein's Holy Spirit Formula) and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 before fleeing Germany in 1932 to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews (regarding Adolf Hitler, see Why Does Satan Love Liars?).

Albert Einstein

1974: A Washington court issued a subpoena on U.S. President Richard Nixon to produce tape recordings and other "cover-up" evidence demanded by prosecutors for their investigation of the Watergate crimes.
