A Bible Journey, 142: Israel And The Moabite God
"And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel"
The original United Kingdom of Israel, and then the divided kingdoms of "Israel" and "Judah" (see the Fact Finder question below) repeatedly experienced military defeat that destroyed their sovereignty. Their military and political defeat was brought about however by their self-inflicted moral defeat that always manifested itself in a religion of perversion.
The Moabite seduction was not the first, nor the last, time that the Israelites turned away from the LORD (Who was and is Jesus Christ; see The Real Jesus: The Word Of The LORD God and A Bible Journey, 56: The Sacred Name) to "commit whoredom."
"25:1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab." (Numbers 25:1 KJV)
The people of Israel, men and women, degenerated into a lewd religion of "whoredom" i.e. "they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods."
"25:2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
The LORD's response, just as it had been every time before (e.g. see A Bible Journey, 133: The Spirit Of Rebellion) and every time after (see the Fact Finder question below) was the same.
"25:4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
Much like the rampant pornography of the present day world, the people's lewdness was "in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel" - before the LORD delivered unto them "the plague" that they were delivering within themselves (see Leviticus 18: Sexual Abominations).
"25:6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 25:7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; 25:8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 25:9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand." (Numbers 25:6-9 KJV)
Also, as was the case every time, before and after, the Levites were the last to become corrupt - primarily because they were "separated" from the general population (see Numbers 3: When Were The Levites Set Apart?).
"25:10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 25:11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. 25:12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: 25:13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
It was a lesson yet-again repeated in the history of Israel. Not the first time. Not the last time.
"25:16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 25:17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them: 25:18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake." (Numbers 25:16-18 KJV)
Fact Finder: (a) What caused the northern kingdom of "Israel" to fall? (b) What caused the southern kingdom of "Judah" to fall?
This Day In History
This Day In History, March 11
222: Roman Emperor Elagabalus was assassinated, along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, by the Praetorian Guard (their palace guards) during a revolt. Their mutilated bodies are dragged through the streets of Rome before being thrown into the Tiber River (see also The Founding Of Rome: The Curious Tale Of Romulus and Remus).
537: The Goths besieged Rome. The Goths were one of the tribes of Teutonic/Germanic people who invaded the Roman Empire in the 3rd to 5th centuries, eventually conquering and succeeding it. Thereafter, the Roman Empire became officially known as Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanica i.e. the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation" (see The Holy Roman Empire Of The German Nation).
1708: Queen Anne withheld Royal Assent from the Scottish Militia Bill, the last time a British monarch vetoed legislation.
1810: Napoleon Bonaparte was married by proxy to Archduchess Marie Louise.
1812: An edict emancipated the Jews in Prussia (not to be confused with Russia; Prussia is in Germany). In reality however, the edict was evaded e.g. Jews could study law but not practice it (see also Jews - Three Tribes and Three Meanings).
1824: Amidst the ongoing genocide (Legal Definition: "The systematic killing of people on the basis of ethnicity, religion, political opinion, social status") and homeland seizure of the Native Americans (the genocide became a children's game known as "Cowboys and Indians"), the United States Department of War created the Bureau of Indian Affairs (see also The First Chinese American War).
1917: General Maude with 50,000 British and Indian troops marched into Baghdad, capturing 9,000 Ottoman/Turkish prisoners (listen to our Sermon The Ottoman Empire).
1931: The communist Soviet Union banned the sale or importation of The Holy Bible.
1935: Adolf Hitler's Nazi air force leader Hermann Goering (who was a German fighter pilot during the First World War, 1914-1918) established the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe. Goering, along with a few other Nazi leaders, were sentenced to death by war crimes trials after the Second World War (1939-1945), but like Hitler, Goering committed suicide before he could be executed (Goering is shown in the photograph below, at left, with his arm on the railing).
1949: Israel's application for membership in the United Nations was approved by the Security Council (membership itself came the following May). Present-day Israel is actually the restoration of the Kingdom of Judah (see Israel In History and Prophecy: Israel Of Judah and When Will The United Kingdom Be Restored?)
1953: A U.S. B-52 bomber accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb on South Carolina, however the weapon of mass destruction did not explode because the detonation device within the bomb was destroyed upon impact with the ground - the detonation altitude setting was incorrect for the location where the bomb was dropped (nuclear weapons are designed to explode while still in the air) (see also Who Would Throw A Nuclear Boomerang? and The Rockets' Red Glare).
1990: The Lithuanian Parliament proclaimed the restoration of the Baltic Republic's pre-World War Two independence from the Soviet Union. Lithuania was the first Soviet Republic to break away from Communist control.
2011: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck 130 kilometers east of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed thousands of people. The event also caused the second-worst nuclear power plant disaster in history.
